84 3.2 cold weather noise

I have an 84 Carrera 3.2 that when the weather gets down to the 40's here in PA the car makes a squelling sound in the engine compartment behind the rear seat, passenger side. If you stand outside the car you can't hear the sound over the exhaust. The sound will eventually diminish (maybe as the engine warms). It sounds like a valve or a pump of some sort. I saw a mention of a cold start valve and wondered if this is what I hear. It sounds like it is in the area of the airbox. Am I hurting the car by driving and or is this something that needs immediate servicing? Thanks.

Sure it's not your fan belt or A/C belt if you have A/C?

Is it only when your heat is on? My heater blower is going bad and will squawk until it warms up. But thats on the left side.

If not those, then maybe a heater blower?

It seams to happen when the heater is not on, usually at the start up. I do have AC but wouldn't the belt be acting up in warm weather also? It really does seem to happen when the temps hit 40 degrees. I have a Volvo wagon that has a similar issue with an air pump for preheating for the turbo when it is a cold day. After a short warm up it also goes away. The 911 is slated to go in this month for state inspection so the issue should be easy to replicate unless PA has a heat wave in November.

Screaming heater :O

Was this issue resolved? Had the same issue in both an 84, and now in an 86 3.2 coupe. Squalling noise when heater is turned on (sounds like a bearing or motor). Goes away once warmed up--side note, when I turn it up all the way, it goes away faster (thus bearing/motor diagnosis)--sometimes it decides to come on/open up on it's own, bringing heat into the car. It is on the drivers side, and it's precisely what was described in this original post. I know someone has to know what this is. Could use some guidance. Thanks!

The original problem sounds like a bad ambient air valve. (on cold days they sound like a moose or chewbacca is in the airbox)
Your problem sounds like a heater blower motor with shot bearings.

i have the same issue but don't need to use the heater as much. are the bearings easy to replace or am i looking at getting a new heater. i assume an used one would eventually do the same thing.

It seems like these threads pop up every time cold weather is around.
I changed my ambient air valve last year and now have no noise when it's cold.
