Ok i found a 911. two actually...THe first was a Gold 84' 911 Carerra Targa with 117,000 in good condition which is getting a top end engine rebuild for $12,000 but i think i can talk him down. Now My friends cousins dad is selling an 82' SC guards red coupe with 50,000 miles for $13,000 and i think i could talk him down too. I ahvent seen it yet but I will tomrrow..but based on the mileage i am thinking it will look pretty good.
What should I do which one would you buy? i rather have the 3.2 over the 3.0 but the SC has half the miles that the Carerra does and Its a Coupe. The 3.2 will need a little bit of work on the interior but besides that nothing. I also like the spoilers on the 3.2 and the 3.0 does not have a whale tail... Your opinions would be appreciated -Rafal- ------------------ 85.5 Porsche 944 |

considering I paid 24k for my 84 cab back in 98, 12k is a !good! deal. I don't see how you're going to talk someone down from 12k on a Carrera unless it's trashed! Now, mine was at the time all original and basically perfect externally....I've never seen a 3.2 for less than 16k in so cal...

Think about if you want a coupe or targa? Are you gonna track the car? Coupe offers stiffer chasis than targa. I have tried SC and Carrera. Both are great performers. Do you really want a gold 911? Which one has a complete service record? Try both and go with your heart.

Hi Raf,
Hope you have forgiven me for diss'ing the Subaru WRX, anyhow I personally would have both cars seriously gone over by an independant source. This may save you a huge amount of money in the long run!. If it was me, I would buy the SC - if the mileage can be confirmed (service records etc) and if the condition reflects the mileage. Also as Andy stated the Coupe would be stiffer. I believe the older Carrera's (mine included) suffer with degradeing electrics which in turn confuse the complex DME. For example, the 3 plugs on the left side of the engine bay on my car (Head temp sensor and flywheel ref. mark sensors) were so old and heat degraded that they 'crumbled'. If these break down without you noticing they can either kill the car or at least make it run rough!(there are at least 7 of these plugs/sockets that I can think of now!) . I have not owned an SC but given the chance again I would have sacrificed any performance and other upgrades for the more simple and robust system of the SC. Just check it has had the usual upgrades, chain tensioners, oil pop off lid, and poss head stud degradation. I am sure there are a ton of others!. Hope this helps rgds Ben |

If the SC Coupe does not have a sunroof I would buy it.
The SC is a bullet-proof car and is a great way to get into Porsches. Jw |

Kurt - It seems as if our Cabriolets are holding their value pretty well. I keep hearing and seeing 3.2s going for $12k-$16k, but as far as I can tell my Cab is still worth around $23k.

Motion, I am sure you are only to aware but 'worth' is as much as someone is prepared to pay at any given time!.
Values will probabley go down as I have it from a very 'High' source that the stock market may slide a bit more before it recovers! Luxury cars are the first to go normally (i could be wrong though!) Incedently someone had the nerve to offer me $13K for mine!!!! ![]() It was good for a giggle anyway! I value mine at about $19-20K but my paintwork is not perfect, rgds Ben [This message has been edited by 86ragtop (edited 07-10-2001).] |

Well you are going to get lots of "opinions". I would go for the SC coupe, especially if it has a sunroof. It has really low miles on a very reliable engine. Targa's are fun in the summer but are prone to wind noises & rattles and don't have the classic 911 look of the coupe (my opinion) Guards red is a very popular color. The price is right. Just be sure to have a pre-purchase inspection done - no matter what you buy! good luck.

Absolutely, positively do not even think about buying one of these cars without a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a known expert. Period. You've been warned. In a few weeks I will perform surgery on my excellent-condition SC motor because it has a (surprise) broken head stud that I would not be dealing with had I insisted on a PPI. It will cost me a minimum of $1500 and I will do all the labor myself except machine work.
That being said, I very much prefer a lesser car that is in better condition, over a 'better' car that is in poorer condition. Since I am not convinced that the Carrera is a substantially "better" car than the SC, I suspect the SC is the best deal. And older 911 can nickle-and-dime you to death. And I'm a coupe man. ------------------ '83 SC |

I've never seen an SC without a sunroof! I think that they were all imported to the states with sunroofs, but I'm not 100% sure.
$12K for the Carrera is CHEAP! Make sure that there is nothing else wrong with it. I would go with the Carrera, especially if it has a fresh top end on it. Sounds like a great deal. On a side note, I have seen Carrera Cabs for about $15K around here. Not sure of the condition, but at that price... -Wayne |
