Starter removal on '87 911
I'm working on my '87 911 targa (G50 gearbox) and I need to remove my starter to replace/repair and I'm struggling to see how it can be done without removing the whole motor. I can get at the lower 10mm allen key bolt but the one on top appears to be out of reach. Is there a trick to doing this?
I've looked through this forum and found a 2002 post saying you could reach over the gearbox up to '86 models. Thanks Ian |

Ian,
First, you should own a shop manual, if you don't already. I have the Bentley and it is pretty detailed. It has fairly detailed description on how to do this job. OK you don't need to drop the whole engine. You only need to lower the rear mounts (by the transmission) a few inches. There are a few steps that you need to follow so not to do unintended damage to the linkages. I think there is a thread on this somewhere in the Pelican forums. I used the Bentley, and it was fine. I also replaced with a high torque starter that I purchased right here from Pelican. Rick

a partial engine drop is required. No other way. It helps if you have a longish 10mm allen socket with a ball end, and a longish flexible handle ratchet.

Thanks guys.
Just found this Starter Removal Question for '87 Carrera which gives more info. I do have the Haynes manual but it doesn't give detail on this job. The Bentley seemed a bit expensive @ €100+ on ebay |

Well worth the cost,IMO. Between the Bentley manual and Pelican, you can tackle most any job that you would care to consider.
I balked at spending the money as well but now that I have it, the manual is one of the best tools I have for the 911.

The Haynes manual is good for a jack pad while you jack up your car. That is all.

I agree. I hate the Haynes manual. I bet it says something like this:
Remove starter. Installation is reverse of removal. And that's it. POS. Ken
