Fresh air?
Ok, I've had my 85 911 for a few months now and I just started to look at the ventilation. There does not seem to be any. My friend who had a 84 told me "If you want fresh air, open a window!" So I know I can get air to blow through the vents with the A/C but I cannot get any air to flow through the vents with the main blower. No matter which way I put the levers, it will only blow air through the defrost vents. Maybe it's not supposed to? Nick

Hey Nick,
I have to go to Bonsal sometime soon maybe I can stop by to give you a tutorial ![]() Any ways, the center dash and side vents (side heat) are only for A/C. The fresh air will come from Defrost Vents and Foot blower vents. Your levers on the dash should be all the way to the left (OFF) Top lever is volume control Middle lever is for upper or lover vents. putting it in the middle will work both vents. putting it all the way right will push air thru the defrost vent hit the wind shield then indirectly to you and passenger Bottom lever control the Defrost mode for maximum defrost, slide lever to the right the other two to the left then the levers between the seat up all the way and dial turned to "3"/Defrost. Hope that helps. Jim

2 ways to do this
Hi Nick,
I know of 2 ways of achieving airflow through the centre vent, one permanent and one temporary. The permanent method uses your aircon system to blow cabin air through the centre vent. This is only recycled air, but it does work reasonably well and gives you good air flow. You do this by installing a switch in line with the fan switch to allow you to switch out the compressor when you want to use the system to move air. Works much better than it sounds. The second method is seasonal and involves swapping the AC and fresh air flexi-hoses in the trunk, so fresh air is routed to the center vent instead of aircond air, which is the normal setup. This is a simple, easy and reversible solution, but only when the weather is mild and you don’t plan to use the AC. Let me know if either if these appeal and I’d be happy to send you some info.

OK, all blowers work but this really cracks me up. Even a Yugo will blow cool air on you through the front vents! So Porsche made this complicated vent system with a bunch of levers and blowers to just blow air on your feet and up by the front window? Holy cow! Well, I found that everything works so I will just open a window. Thank you. Nick

If you leave the upper and middle lever in the middle (right before the right fan light turns on), you will get fresh air at volume respectively with speed.
Caution, if you have nats or mosquitos around, they will find their way into you cab over night. They seem to like the cozy smell and feel of the can

I think I will just install a very small computer fan on the left side of the dash. Hook it up to battery power and switch on when I want a little air on my face. Wait, they are really small. I'll install a whole row of fans all across tha top of the dash! Heck, the car has 100 gauges and switches anyway. Who will notice? Or I can open a window. Nick

If you can live without the clock, it's possible to duct fresh air through that hole, and there's a Ford vent that fits perfectly:
Home made lightweight vent.air intake
