i need help with fan belt

i'm in north carolina for a few days (visiting my sister) on my trek home to ohio from daytona and am checking over my 85' targa before my trip home and noticed that my fan belt has stretched to an unacceptable looseness. it squeels now when cold but not when the engine is warm. i have a new belt with me and am going to change it but the nut holding the v-pulley is pretty tight. my problem is the 2 small holes on the outer edge of the v-pulley where you put the screwdriver in to keep the pulley from spinning when you loosen the nut. it is deforming slightly and am concerned about the nut not coming loose. i know that i cannot put something in the blades themselves (they will break i'm told) to get more leverage for the nut.
is there a better method in this situation?
any help is appreciated

thanks
bell

Try a large channel lock and grip the whole pully at the old belt to prevent it from turning. Wrap a rag around the pully to avoid scaring the pully.

thanks pbs911.that worked like a charm
i would guess it stretched so much due to the fact that it was a generic ribbed belt i replaced it with a genuine porsche belt and it seems to spin alot smoother now.
and again.....this board rocks

thanks

Bell, keep an eye on the new belt for a while. My (Porsche brand) new belt stretched/bedded in, and needed adjusting twice in two weeks.

Porsche Crest

An alternative without damaging side-effects would be to put the transaxle in 5th gear and lock the emergency brake securely, then grab (or have an assistant do it) both segments of the fan belt and squeeze them together ... and use an impact wrench with a 24 mm socket on the alternator nut. Be sure not to lose any of the spacer washers when the nut and convex washer comes off ... ALL SIX of the spacers need to be under the heavy convex washer, or between the pulley outer half and the fan hub!

You really should get the proper factory spanner tool to fit the alternator pulley notches!

ok...thanks bill, there are 4 shims in the v-pulley and that gave it the correct tightness so i have means to make it tighter if neccecary.
after closer inspection, the old belt did have some cracks in it (in between the ribs), this probably would've broken on the trip home, my pcar ran fine/cool for the 1024 miles to daytona and the 500 miles(?) from daytona to here, it would've sucked to have had to change this on the side of the freeway.

thanks again

i'm using my mulligan on this one
now that i'm done i remembered a thread about the factory tool kit and the correct tool to grab the pulley.......and guess what......yep.....it was in my tool kit
oh well, i know better for next time and i didn't damage anything with the channel locks so all is good.

I had assumed you were going with the screw driver approach because you did not have the factory tool kit. O-well glad it worked out.

Exclamation

Are the other two shims (of the six that should be there) under the convex washer on outside of the pulley? If not, you risk damage to the outer pulley half, fan and alternator. Jim
