fuel pump check valve

OK its been a week waiting for parts to come, so today I started to replace the check valve on the fuel pump of 1980 targa. the pump has the check valve built in, so I am thinking to just install the new valve into the old valve still in place? then I see that there is an opening in the out side end of the new valve. Do I fasten this with a cap nut to seal the end? Looked back at the part in the catalog. Don't see any thing about a cap nut. Whats up with this? Is there a part missing or is this valve incompatable with my pump?

JW,

The check valve would need one sealing washer to connect to the FP and another two (2) washers for the banjo fitting plus end cup. Otherwise you'll have a leaking FP.

But that is a 77 to79 pump with the built in check, in 1980 they went to your check valve.

Thanks for the replies guys!! I guess one of the challenges of the somewhat older cars is figuring out what is stock and what has been changed.
I did find the cap nut listed for turbos, but the part may be from Germany only. I did spend an hour going to the nearest hardware store today to search for a cap nut that would fit to no avail. will look at the auto parts store on the other side of the island tomorrow. I guess this has to be seen as some kind of treasure hunt. I'll end up with 4+ hrs looking for a nut that should have come with the new check valve. Am I having fun yet? Rant over...

Cheers Richard

What symptons did you have that led you to replacing the check valve, or how did you know you needed to? I am having an issue that I think I have narrowed down to to either the fuel pump, the check valve, or the pressure regulator. Thanks guys

It is a starting issue when the car is hot and has been sitting for a short while. I put in a good fuel accumulator, which is another likely culprit. no change , so this is next on the list.

Residual pressure tests.........

Perform the residual pressure tests to pin point the culprit/s. Pressurized the system with the FA's drain line disconnected and plugged. A bad FA would leak at the bottom port. If the FA passed the test, check the FP's check valve and would need another another residual pressure test. Depending what type of FD you have, the return line through the FD could also contribute this problem.
