5 LB fire extinguisher mounted in rear tunnel ?
Hey guys,
Anybody mount a 5 lb fire extinguisher on the rear tunnel between the seats ? I have a 2.5 extinguisher mounted on a Bray Krause bracket under my passenger seat, but from what some people have told me,a 2.5 lb extinguisher is like spitting in the wind if it ever came down to putting out a fuel line fire or an oil fire due to leakage on the exaust... I'm not concerned about the extra weight and nobody goes in the back seats anyways ! Just wondering if anybody's done it or have any suggestions ? Cheers ! Phil

Phil,
Be very careful mounting anything to the tunnel. Just inside the tunnel are the fuel lines, the main battery B+, the main wiring harness and more. You will find many posts where the owner is swimming in gasoline or dealing with shorted wires. ![]() Be careful. Absolutely know what is on the other side of any metal panel you drill. Best, Grady

Grady,Charlie,
I kind of figured that would be a sensitive area to install a mounting plate ... Been drilling holes in aircrafts for the last 30 years so i'm kind of keen about where i drill and that's why i'm asking if anybody has done this before or had any suggestions as to where to mount a 5lb Halon extinguisher inside their cars ! Been looking at posts regarding this matter but nobody seems to have done it before ... Cheers ! Phil

I approach the situation this way:
IF there is a fire in my car, I run away - fast. Only if I can retrieve my fire extinguisher safely do I return as ‘firefighter’. The 'usual' situation is attacking someone else’s fire. Even then, I am very cautious. Even a small burn injury is something I’m going to avoid. My only fire was a biggie (for me). How did it catch fire? Post #15. The SCCA ‘Pros’ got it out. Best, Grady

Peel back the carpet, and remove your shift linkage cover plate. Use that thin metal plate as a template to cut out a thick metal plate out of some sheet metal. That will give you a nice mounting plate, without drilling the body. If I remember correctly, I mounted my extinguisher mount to my new plate before installing the plate back onto the tunnel, with the carpet sandwiched in between. That way, all I had to do was cut 4 tiny holes in the carpet to bolt the plate back on to the tunnel and it was very "factory" clean. I did paint and POR my fabbed plate, of course, before installing.
Hope that makes sense. It seems sturdy enough for my 2.5 lb, but you might need to beef up the mounting bolts / screws for a 5 lb monster. That is a lot of inertia if you hit something.

After careful consideration ... lol
I'm going to bond the mounting bracket that i'm going to fabricate to the tunnel with either urethane adhesive or structural adhesive... no holes ! Doug, you are right about the size of the 5lb monster but it will be secured properly ,although your plan sounds good ![]() I'll most likely post some pictures for further reference if anybody else decides to free their front seat location and install their extinguisher in the rear ! Cheers ! Phil

Is this a portable unit or a fire control system with lines fore and aft?
Here's an idea if it is the latter. The fire extinguisher rests on a small aluminum bracket bolted thru the floor and into the rear vertical panel as shown. Jim

I agree with the run away fast plan.
![]() I have a 2.5lb mounted to the driver side intertia reel mounting location (I have harnesses). And though everyone says a 2.5lb won't do much, it's more about grabbing to help someone get out of their car, saving mine if something were to happen isn't likely, I'd rather just be out.

What about making a U bracket that mounts to the inboard seat belt mounting holes and loops over the top of the tunnel and mounting to that?

I have a single 3 pounder under the seat that I can still reach while strapped in, a 2nd one mounted to the roll bar.
