License plate lights...

OK, so one side was out , went to replace the bulb and now I can't affix the holder back in. I guess after 18 years the rubber has been eaten away by condensation. So, any suggestions on what to use to fill in the space so I can screw the light holder back in? THe location is stripped.

You might try something like windshield sealent. It should dry clear.

Put a dab into each hole let it set up a bit, then put the assembly in, screw in the screws, and then help the whole affair stay in (as it is vertical) until the sealent sets up fully.

When dry, this stuff is essentially like bendable clear putty that is reasonably hard.

Failing that, I would either go oversize screws or try to shim a nut into the holes: the nut would need to have most of the flats shaved to a round. You'd stuff that into the hole and go with machine screws or ?.

Good luck,
John

Lightbulb

Standing under my favorite (at this time of year leafless) shade tree, this idea came to me. Maybe a couple of those drywall screw anchors (the plastic expandable type) cut to length and set in place with some silicone. Just a thought.

Hello

They are a thight fit and a little screwdriver will help runing the edge along the plastic glas. Also those glases ( Made by Scheffenacker ) tent to warp by heat and will not fit and will not seal anymore.

If you're feeling ambitious, you can take the bumper guard off. Might make it easier to get at the clip on blind nut that's inside the opening for the license plate light. The screws are of the self-tapping type, so you can most likely replace the blind nut at your local hardware store with a close SAE substitute for the existing metric nut. The bumper guards come off pretty easy. Just three nylock nuts holding them on. Although, studs are probably boogered up with 17 yrs. of road debris.
