Installation of my $15 Oil Cooler Fan.

I bought this fan for about $15.00 AND Could not mount it because the Horns were in the way. I bought a horn Bracket and with part of the Old horn mount I moved the Horns very Far forward and now have plenty of space between the Horn and Oil Cooler.

I spent about 7 Hours today and only have 2 wires to hook up and DONE. Already installed the On / Off Switch when working on the Power Steering.

Here is my first horn re-mount and Second.

Here is the Fan Mounted to the Radiator by using 2 - 1" Aluminum Flat Stock and 4 - 4MM Stainless Screws and Nylocks.

Here it is Mounted to the Radiator in the Car

Here is an Under the Car Shot showing the Fan Mounted and all of the space now between the Fan & Horns.

I already see 1 mistake! I left a Bolt in on the Outer Fender side that I will need to reach in and remove. I was also careful to make sure I knew which way to wire this so the fan Blows "Through" The Radiator

Other than that, I will wire it into the switch tomorrow and use a 20 Amp Fuse.

I got the "Oil Cooler Fan" From THE FIND! The $15 is rounded off because I think it Actually was $12.95

I felt that Hot the fan may use 15 amps So I am using a 20 amp Fuse and switch so it will only blow when something is Wrong.

Hi Vincent.

This post talks of installing a relay for the fan. Might be worth considering next spring.

Is it OK to run the Carrera oil cooler without the fan

Also, you can notch the bumper on the bottom to promote air flow but considering the upgrade of the 3.2 cooler - with a fan - it might be overkill. I have a Mocal on my 81 and it has no air flow seals like the Carrera cooler but I have never had cooling issues and it seldom gets above the bottom box on the gauge unless I am flogging it.

Thanks for the post Bob. I did think about wiring this to a Relay but found the 20 amp switch with its own Ground (3 wires) and knowing that I have a 6 to 9 amp Motor I felt that using 14 gauge wires and direct Battery Voltage that this SHOULD work with no problems.

I did this set up for the serious Traffic in DC & while using the AC. There was one other thought, I remember a few times when I was running 130 To 140 and HAD to slow down to let the engine cool! I HATE THAT !! I never want to have a over heating problem again. If you noticed the Fan Assembly is Fairly open and I Really have the Horns out of the way Now for better air flow yet! I am coming your way on Saturday the 25 of September on my way to Toledo to Bury my Brother and then to Columbus the Next weekend for a ReUnion. I hope I can work it out so yo can drive my Rag and see how the Power Steering feels to You

It took about 1 hour to wire it and 1 more hour to realize that when you are running the Fan Motor Backward that you simply Cannot make the Light in the Switch come on when the Motor is on.

I must have gone through about $10 in Connection ends before I finally got smart enough to realize that I could Test every wiring idea First. There are a lot of Options with 3 wires form a Switch and 2 wires from the Fan. I really wasted the most time cutting the wrap I had on the 3 wires to Ground the Black wire. The Black wire was also a Hot wire which I soon found out! (After I had stripped 2 feet of wrapping )

I ended up putting a White / Silver Paint dot above the Switch so I (and my wife) would know where ON was since it is not wired into the Switch.

SHe was going to drive the car today but it is raining and there was a "Clunk" when using the Windshield wipers. I pulled out the Speedo and lubed the Shaft ends only to find that there was a Bolt missing. I then pulled out the Clock and with blue Loctite installed another bolt. Everything is all quiet now. Rain or shine she will dirve it tomorrow. (The first time with the Electric Power Steering I have been talking about elsewhere)

But did you move the wipers to the passenger side while you were in there?

NO! We did that on the 1976 and even have NEW Arms correctly bent to make it work perfectly.

Here is why, After thinking about it for a long time, Porsche is about the ONLY Car I know of with the Wipers Parked on the Left side. At very high speed they rise up and you end up looking through them. We had already lower the parking place so we decided to leave something totally Porsche. On our PORSCHE! Trust me, It was not easy and we are still Thinking about it!

Nice job. Have to ask though, why not swap out the trumpet horns for some puck horns?

I had these horns and do not have other horns. If I was going to replace the Horns I woul use the Horrible sounding and Iritating ones in my Old BMW! Everyone gets out of the way when I use them!

Understood. Another option would be to ditch the high tone horn. My low tone horn went belly up on me so I was left with only the high pitched girly horn. Always keep the low tone horn to maintain some masculinity?

I am, sooo Messed up! Saturday is the 24th and now we will be in Ohio on Friday the 23rd. PM Sent!

You can check out my Rag yourself and see the MSD Ignition I mounted under the drivers Seat and feel the Power Steering that I hope to have the SPeed Switch installed!

I guess the Fan going up in price to $18 was a deal breaker and SC is now mad at me
