1980 911 SC Interior Door Handle Replacement

Can someone explain how to replace the interior door handle replacement procedure? Hopefully this can be accomplished without removing the panel...thanks in advance.

With the handle in the open position, pop the end of the rod that runs back inside the door where it meets the handle. The rod has an L shape on the end that fits a hole in the handle. The handle pivots on a metal rod held in by two very small C clips (top and bottom). Remove each C clip and the rod will slide out and the handle is removed. Installation is the reverse. I removed the C clips with the whole armrest out of the car. Did I mention the C clips are very small?

actually you only need to remove the top c-clip and the pivot rod will fall out the bottom. trust me, the fewer clips you remove the easier the job will be. have a magnet on hand when doing this as you have a better than 50/50 chance of dropping one of those little buggers.

Bump because I'm in the middle of this right now and can't get that paper thin tiny C-clip to slide out. What's the trick? Special tool? All I have handy is some needle nose plyers and a small Swiss army knife. The C-clip has such a low profile that I can't get a hold of it.

Except for the broken plastic interior door latch that I'm replacing, no other part of the door has been removed, yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I took the whole handle off the door then used the end of a small screw driver.

@Kiwiokie - Thanks a bunch. That got me headed in the right direction.

Those microscopic c-clips were a pain in the butt. A combination of will power and my micro-sized screw driver set got me through it. Then it was all downhill from there. Feels so good to be able to exit my car without rolling down the window to unlatch from the outside.

Someone out there sells a metal replacement for the OEM plastic handle (maybe Pelican or Automotion?). A good chance to upgrade. Mine bends every time I pull the door...waiting for it to snap off so I have an excuse to buy a metal one!
