Cool Seduced !!!!!

I finally fitted the new ditributor this morning- the old one was definately bad!.
Then I went for a drive...... she is sooo subtle in her seduction!!!
Of course now she is running perfectly .

Can't wait to show the mechanic (who charged me $1000 for false diagnostics) and hear his comment when he sees the faulty distributor!.
I will suggest he owes me some credit in his workshop!.
Anyway,
Thanks once again for the persistantly helpfull enthusiasts out there!
Rgds Ben

She's a keeper for the moment, trust comes with time!
I ran her for a solid hour and gave a blast up to ***mph and she was fine!.
The other day, someone even had the nerve to offer me $13K cash for her!!!
AS IF!!!!!!
For now we are going to rekindle that lost desire and there will be no mentions of 'new Vettes' or any other marques!

I'm pleased that the distributor diagnosis proved accurate and that you now have a sweetly running Porsche. That car will definately seduce again- perhaps well enough for it to earn a place in your garage once more?
Treat yourself to a LONG drive around some great windy roads and rejoice in the fact that you now know nearly every ignition and fuel system like the back of your hand. It's a hard learning curve sure, but I bet you feel pretty confident now??
Good on you Ben.

Ben, I spent recently considerable time and aggravation considering a 911S with an engine that had been "highly modified" by Blair. Everyone (seller, seller's wife, AND Blair) was thrilled at the prospect of my taking the car off their hands, until I mentioned that I was ready to have my wrench (Bill Rudtner) look it over. Suddenly seller (after consulting with Blair) balked and the deal died. Seller stopped returning calls and e-mails. What was I to conclude??? Since then, I've heard enough to confirm my suspicions. I knew my prospective 911S had *some* problems. Now, I've learned just how naive I was being. Whew! Clean getaway. I've had similar experiences with other "gifted but eccentric and irrascible" wrenches. If you've caught them on a good day, great. If not, look out. In the end, it makes our hair a little thinner and grayer, and our wallets a lot lighter. Glad your baby's running again.

Ben,

Glad to see it is working now. I would not ask for a discount in his shop as I would not feel comfortable in his working on any car from now on. I would talk to him and see if he will work out anything with you.

The world is becoming more and more populated by parts changers. Not many troubleshoots anymore, just swaps parts and hopes it corrects the problem. If you find a real mechanic, hold on to him and support him, as they are worth their weight in gold.

JA

not to dredge up painful memories.........but what was the original problem you were having? what different paths did you take prior to arriving at the decision to replace your distributor.

(sorry if i missed your earlier thread on this topic)

I'm glad you decided to stick it out...what's rewarding is the ability, some time down the line, to talk the talk.

There's nothing more emasculating than not being able to tell folks how you tackled problems on your car: "Well, then it died all the time, and I took it to my wrench and he fixed it after several tries. I think it was the distributor or something, I don't remember."

Anytime, anyone says anything about how my car sounds, runs, or looks, I know exactly what they're talking about and I'm one of the following:
1) Responsible for it (if it's a debacle usually)
2) Working on it (but hey, I know the lingo, baby)
3) Know that's the way these cars are, and that's what makes 'em special

That's awesome...I was wondering what the problem would turn out to be! Great looking car...looks just like my 87 I had before I got the 88 Coupe.

Tmtcguer:
Briefly,
car stalled after 'warming up'.
checked pretty much whole engine electrical harness componenets of DME and swapped DME, replaced coil, Head temp sensor, rotor and Dist cap. The Car continued to die, exhausted mentally and work sufferring had it towed to local wrench who replaced the 'now new' rotor and did not look further!!!!!
Big mistake, then he found a loose vacum tube and followed down a path of bad injector, then worn exhaust valve ending up by informing me I needed a head rebuild! .
With that I collected the car and descided to remove the distributor to see 'how' it could destroy a rotor and by now, another dist. cap!.
'Bingo'.
You guys I.D.'d the distributor with excessive 'end float' and even reccomended a source for a new one ($100).(this over a course of nearly 2 months!)
Result:
Car runs fine
PS Roger911s- thanks for the background, Blair did some good bodywork for me (battery tray rust) but I fear the electronics and DME stuff is beyond him. When I picked the car up from him the last time, my marine engineer came with me and when he asked Blair technical questions he 'faltered and fumbled!'. Confirmation that removing the car was the right descision.
I guess we live and learn!.
If you can reccomend any other mechanics in the long Island area I would appreciate it and if you are ever in the Sag Hbr/Hamptons area maybe we can meet for a beer?
either way, thanks for the insight!
Rgds Ben

Oh and no, that is not my boat in the background, on the grounds of anonymity I decided not to include the boat, but it is a 95' motor yacht flagged out of the Cayman Islands (approx value $4-5 million)
(I am the Captain- not the owner )

If this isn't a perfect example why this board kicks so much ass than I don't know what does.

Very glad things seem to have worked themselves out ragtop.

Imagine what we could do with VIDEO CONFERENCING!!!!
