Weber Needle Valve Mystery
What a surprise!!!! When I disassembled one of my Webers, I found that one of the needle valves was missing the little ball. I have no idea how long its been gone. What is the function of the ball? The carb never overflowed externally but should I be concerned that fuel has spilled into the cylinder enough to leak though to the oil sump and compromised the oil?
Thanks in advance, Rob

Yikes!
The ball closes the valve when the lever on the float contacts the ball (when fuel level rises high enough), to stop the flow of fuel. The ball has to be down in the fuel well somewhere because it's too large to be spit into the engine via the main jet. However it could be lodged in the passage that feeds the main jet from the fuel well. Maybe your needle valve had one of the Viton balls that were known to be problematic?
