stereo whine???

Hello All
I am getting a bad whine from my stereo(in my 1983 911SC) when the key is in the on position..It does make noise when thw engine is running but not as bad..I am puzzled why it is making this noise when the car is not even running.Any suggestions.

Thankx

I think electronics shops sell a filter that reduces or eliminates the feed back noise from the coil/plug wires. Some manufacturers state it will not insulate the feedback to stereos.

I remember I had to add that to my VW back in the day

I was going to suggest OT for this topic. At first, I thought you were referring to Mormon wives who berate their husband.

I would say you have interference from an electronic signal. Try separating the audio and power cables, and find a better ground for the head unit.

I'd bet it is the CD box.

Hey I resent that statement, my wives don't whine much

Whats your stereo consist of? Just a headunit? Any amplifiers hooked up to the system? Could be anything from a bad ground, pinched RCA cable or speaker line. If you havent changed anything in the install, it could be a bad tracer in a component of even something as small as a bad switch, relay or car ground on the factory side. Unfortunatly its trial and error. Check all grounds, then move to unpluging the RCA cables one by one while the stereo is playing(car running or not). From there disconnect each speaker wire one by one and re connect in the same order while listening to the system to see if the "whine" changes. Finally you may have to pull each component and "bench" each one alone. I know it can be confusing but i hope it helps.
