DISTRIBUTION at 911/996
Hello,
I have a 911/996 2003 carrera and last summer i was running with it out of oil but not so long to damage it too bad.So i tried to rebuild th engine so i have bought all the damaged pieces.The axle,bearings,pomps and everything.Now i put all in order but i hardly try to find someone which know how to set up the distribution because i hared that is an order how to put the crankshafts and the chain.Please someone help me i am in a desperate situation because i have broken one crankshaft already because i didn't put them well in order. thank you very much. |

This has to be a joke..
1. Ran the engine out of oil but not TOO long 2. WTH, i'll rebuild it though I don't know how 3. Oopsy, snapped a crank, let me try again with online advice!

Do you have the tools to facilitate a rebuild? Some specialised wrenches are needed.
Oh, don't forget to fill the engine with oil after the rebuild.

C'mon, there not that hard, except for the timing!!!! Do you at least have a manual for the engine rebuild? sounds like you have a lot of cash. Give us something...

yes why is a joke.I am from romania and i tried to repair it at PORSCHE and they told me that they don't repair engines so i tried to repair it.I was searched in romania for parts and i found a man who sold parts of 911/996 engine.i told him my problem and he told me that he made his boxster engine by himself so i asked him if he can repair this engine and he told me YES but he don't know one thing...to set up the distribution because it is a special way.

IMO if you can't check the oil then there is now way you should be rebuilding that motor, ship it to someone who knows what they are doing.

The low on oil could be from the RMS/ IMS problems these motors are rumored to suffer from. Perhaps these are the parts he refers to have bought. Here's a good video to help though you really need the factory manual and a few specialized tools.

I think there have been some members here that are in Romania, or at least I think I remember reading some posts from someone there. Perhaps they can help if they speak up here. |

Depends on how far down you have to got to do the rebuild.
You'll generally need to buy or make the following: piston wrist pin insertion tool (we made this) cam locks (we bought this, but they could have been made) cam holders (we made these) cam tensioner pin set (we bought these -- and doubt they could be easily made) The real question -- is what was damaged. If you ran low on oil and suffered a rod bearing failure -- your crank is hosed. I have not found a source to reliably repair these. The spun bearing damages the crank journals. There are no oversized bearings that I am aware of. good luck with your project -- Mike

There are no oversized bearings that I am aware of. good luck with your project -- Hello Mike, i have changed all damaged parts of the engine.The bearings was a little affected and also the axle.the pistons seems to be ok and also the block appears like new.this is the reason that i wanted to repair it.I didnt run for long,when the light shows i stoped and i went to porsche service and they told me that i need a new engine and they donțt repair engine,they just change with new one,so i went to a friend wich repaired his own boxster engine,he is mechanic,and he opend the engine case and after this he told me that the bearings are affected and the axle and oil pumps,in fact one bearing was more damaged.then i ordered new parts and now is assembled but the final step is to set up the distribution.I have put the crankshaft on piston 1-3 and now remain to set it on 4-6 this is the hard part because i donțt know the real position of them. |
