Well it has been a while since I posted anything and now I have the heads off the engine and have found the problem.
wow who would have thunk a small machine screw could do so much damage.
Look like I need a sleeve, Cylinder head and piston.

any comments are appreciated.

Good that you found the problem.

dont know but I have the offender. this is probably gonna cost me an arm to fix.

The good (kinda) news is you just need one of each, there usually cheaper because no one needs just one. Someone might just have one kicking around the garage and make you a good deal.
Most likely a small screw fell in around the spark plug and when they were pulled, it fell in. Or it fell in via the induction system.

Did the same thing about 30 years ago w/a Fiat 850. Dropped a small nut down the carb throat, made it all the way past an intake valve and embedded in a piston crown. At least it was a Fiat and not a P-car.

I think you should let your wife sand down the bad spots with some sandpaper and see I'd that helps .she loves you alot and would do anything to hep I am sure .;)

an 850 would have rusted away before you got the head off.:D

thanks peachy for the ideas but it needs to be done correctly and this is an area that my wife cannot help.

If only I knew where I could get all this. if anyone has this lying around I would sure like to know.

Is it just me or does this photo show a lot of loose metal debris fallen down in to the engine? It seems like you are planning to replace said damage and reseal?You might want to post on the engine rebuilding forum and quiz the resident experts there whether or not that would be wise.
Metal chunks have been floating around in your oil passages for as long as you've had this problem. You need to ask the experts whether it's even safe to assume you could clean enough of it out and reseal. The consequences could be even worse.

. . . rust was the only thing holding it together anyway. Well, some duct tape and JB Weld, too. After working w/Marelli electrics, made me wish they were Lucas instead! ;)

what you are seeing is a reflection of the silver indentions in the piston itself. I did not find any metal shards in the cylinder itself. interesting but i believe that the piston just kept beating that darn sheetmetal screw into the head and the piston over and over again.

Youre looking at KS brand, I wouldnt re ring alucil.

can you recommend some kind of a solvent to clean up the pistons and heads?

I always dip my parts in a bucket of this to get them nice and clean. Wash with water and then final clean with brake parts cleaner. Pistons and rings get dipped in trans fluid for assembly lube.
