What's this knob for?

Hi, I'm new to this forum. Just bought a 911SC (81) and was wondering what the knob in the picture's for. I've downloaded an owner manual from the web but it doesn't say. I also have a couple of Porsche reference books but no luck there, too. Would appreciate anyone out there who can help. Thanks!

Ha! It messed me up that it's a RHD car. Normally, that's where the sensor for the automatic heat control goes. But that's just an open vent with the sensor mounted within the dash. I've never seen an actual knob there. Is it definitely factory?

Yes....it would have helped from the outset to say you have a right hand drive car.....

Guys, the RHD is messing you up: The thermo sensor was on the roof between the sunvisors , on the 911SC.IF the car was a later RHD 964, then the sensor would be to the left of the controls. No sensor vent was installed in the dash till the 964.
That space , just to the left of the steering column on this car was an extra hole for various items. Early on in the G series, it could have been used for intermittent wiper control or speaker fader control.
As the hole drilled in the cap looks offset, you should look under the dash and follow the wires from the backside of that switch and follow to wherever they go.

Note that yours is an '86, and your diagram specifies '86-'91. This thread is about an '81.

My '81 Targa has the temp sensor above the windshield, between the visors.

Just like Dave said.

The ignition switch location gives it away as a RHD.....at it was the first thing "I" noticed.....

In that case, you are both correct.

I deleted my posts.

While trying to help a P-owner in Canada with his Auto Heat, he sent me pics of a Euro SC Targa with the dash mounted sensor.

Thanks.

Thanks for all for your replies and sorry, shoulda mentioned it was a RHD - it was a direct import from Porsche factory to Malaysia. :-p. And being in the tropics, I'm sure I have no need for any more heating since it averages around 33 deg C here, if it is indeed a cabin heat sensor! :-D Will get my mechanic to check it out my next time in as suggested by TRE Cup.

Actually the sensor was moved to the dash in that spot in the 3.2 Carreras. Not sure exactly which model year the change was made in, but my '86 has it there on the dash.

Hi all Pelicans, just to close the loop on this. I finally out what the knob's for. It's the toggle left-right switch to adjust the side mirrors. LOL! Anyone else have it in that location?

Anyway, found out I have 4 broken studs. :-( Looks like a rebuild is in the books for 2011.

My mirror switch is under the arm rail above the electric window switch.....did they change the switch location on the Carreras?

The factory liked to put these switches on top of the trim piece, not under it...
