3.0 track car rebuild
Couldn't pass this one up, so a friend and I went in together on this project. 78 911 euro race car, motor was killed when fan belt let loose on the track.
![]() Lots of go fast goodies, the guy must have lived with the Automotion catalog in his pocket. Weltmeister sway bars, solid engine mounts, autopower roll cage (EEEEKKK!!). Cool bits, the wevo shifter and cv joint for shift coupler. Big problem is the motor...82 sc block, puking oil everywhere. 100% leak down, heads and exhaust. Gaps between heads and cylinders. This got cooked. ![]() It had the top end done recently, it's a shame... ![]() ![]() ![]() When the pistons get too hot, the rings break and the aluminum melts. Busted ring bits do this.... ![]()

John,
The car looks like it was as described, impressive work getting it torn down already. Looking forward to checking it out when I drop off my SC on Friday. |

Thanks, tear down is the easy part, reassembly is the tough part without breaking the bank.

Just the one head is dimpled, maybe fixable. Prob have to redo all the valve guides for safety.
Maybe someone has a spare or two 82 3.0 head laying around? |

Oh, oil pump may have ingested a ring tidbit. I can see a notch in a gear through the output opening.

Case came apart this weekend...cleaned up well.
![]() ![]() ![]() Cleaned up the worst head, looks salvageable. Dinged a few exhaust valves though, so they will be replaced. ![]() Oil pump gear has a groove, still need to tear it down.

question about the dinged up head... Will that be potential hot spot for detonation? I have heard that any rough spots could cause some trouble.
thanks for posting.
