911SC RoW Thread

As many before me have stated, I too have been following a number of build threads and felt it was about time to start a thread of my own.

First a little back story, a good friend of mine had been pushing me for a few years to sign up for a PCA DE event. After a bit of reluctance, I finally signed up to attend a DE event in July of 2010 at The Glen!!!! At the time I owned a 2006 Cadillac CTS-V, while a very capable car not the first choice as a track vehicle. After a good bit of rousing..."are you planning on driving or being chauffeured around the track" it was time to hit the track.

l

The factory DVD / Navigation with the lazy boy style seats did provide for a comfortable hangout between sessions.

After one session I was hooked and by the end of the weekend I couldn't get the sound of an air cooled 911 circling the track out of my head!

The last couple of weeks have seen some recent upgrades.

Out with the old...

In with the new SSI’s and 2 in / 1 out M&K exhaust

I was actually very surprised with the fit of the new SSI's.

I had a couple of clearance issues, the first being with the new Engine Block Oil Pressure Line Cross Over Pipe. I was able to hammer out the top tube to flapper box for a little better clearance of the oil line.

Second was the seam on the left side SSI interfering with the clutch helper spring. We took a punch to try and back the seam off the helper spring however it is still left resting on the spring.

Anyone else experience the same issues when installing a set of SSI's?

Sorry I can't help with the SSI/helper spring problem but I wanted to compliment you on the nice looking 911.

It must have been quite a change going from the CTS-V to an old school 911.

Welcome to Pelican!

For the helper spring, take a Dremel to the flange, trimming out a half moon, and it should clear without your opening the chamber behind the flange.

P.S. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the power increase with the SSIs, especially over 3500 rpm. It's easy to hit the rev limiter - be sure that your car has one. The Euro cars used a rev limiter in the distributor rotor, whereas US cars used a fuel cutoff. You want a 7200 rpm rev limiter in there.

I just bent the edge of the heat exchanger down with a pair of lineman pliers, a hammer and flat punch where the helper spring was hitting.

Nice color. my 79 is the same.

I hammered my flange down to clear the omega spring. I can't say I had any other issues with the fitment of my SSI's. It's a very worthwhile upgrade.

Thanks Wayne!

It was quite a change in going from the CTS-V with double the HP to an 911sc. However, nothing puts a smile on my face quite like a bit of spirited driving in the 911.

Tom,

I'm surprised with the number of SSI's sold and installed they require any trimming and bending to fit. Figured they would bolt right up with no clearance issues.

I definitely noticed the car pulling a bit better above 3500 rpm

My dad helping to pull out the old rusted flapper boxes.

I bought a used set of flapper boxes that I am freshening up prior to install. I also pulled the heater blower motor and will be back dating the heater ducts.
