passing smog with carbs
Hello,
I have a 1980 911 sc that I am in the process of making into a street/track car. I have always wanted to put carbs on it and lately I have been having problems with the vacuum hoses in the injection system (a leak in the large black rubber piece that sits at the very top). Because of this, I am not tempted more than ever to get the carbs, the only problem is that from my understanding, I will not be able to keep it a street car because carbs are not allowed on a car from my year. My question is, is there any way for my car to be street legal with carbs on it (in california)? Maybe an aftermarket, cleaner catalytic converter with cleaner technology? If I were to make it run cleaner by doing other things like that, would it work, or would it still fail the visual inspection? Please let me know if there is any way to do it/ slide past the restrictions if possible. Help would be greatly appreciated, pm me if you dont feel comfortable posting how you do it on the thread. Thanks a ton, Scott

The only way to do it is to swap the CIS and the emissions gear back on every 2 years. Even if you could pass the sniffer with carbs on the engine...somehow...you would never pass the visual.

No way in CA with carbs on an SC. You fail the visual, do not pass Go or skip to the tail pipe tets.

Move? or get a car that came with carbs on it.

you will want to get a car older than yours - up to '74 or '75 if you MUST have carbs
if you can handle the bump in class, drop a 3.2L or 3.6 in for maximum fun and clean air compliance |

ok, thanks for the suggestions.
In that case, does anyone have a replacement that they want to sell or does anyone know how to make a replacement (out of some type of hose or something) I am talking about the large rubber hose type thing at the very top of the injection of a 1980 911 sc. It is made of all rubber and has ridges/lines across it and it attaches to two breather type hoses, the air intake above the air box, and into the throttle housing. I apologize for not knowing the proper name. thanks scott
