engine/trans seperating
Hi,
The search is not working ... this is my first engine drop. Both engine and rans came out with no issues. Now, I am seperating the trans but can't get it to separate beyond an inch or so. I remove the smaller arm on the clutch mechanism and pushed the lever forward. There was a post I saw not too long ago describing this same situation - if you know where it is, please include the link. Thanks, Tony |

As long as the shaft the small arm is attached to is free to move there shouldnt be anything preventing the separation. I dropped my engine and tranny a couple months ago and if I remember correctly I had the same problem. I think i just supported the tranny with a jack making sure it was level, and not binding on the studs. Then i just held onto the tranny mount plate and kicked the engine a few times and it came right off. Probably not the safest or most elegant solution but it worked.

![]() So you are saying that the clutch release lever has to come off the shaft? Maybe the arm is binding against the tans case and the fork on the throwout bearing can't rotate? Oh, how I would like to see this baby come apart... thanks for the tip. |

Yep. Check the clutch throw out fork. It will seem free and clear but that is where your problem is. Also, make sure the TDC and flywheel sensor housing are free of the tranny/engine housing.

I found another thread suggesting the use of the adjusting bolt to work the clutch lever free of the shaft. I'll need a small puller as well.

Tony,
If you remove the clutch helper spring, this should release the tension at the release arm. You don't need to remove the entire stack of parts. Once tension is gone, you can rotate the release arm "away" from the release bearing. Then the engine & tranny can be separated. HTHs...

For the benefit of the next "first engine drop" ... this is the ticket. I didn't realize what was happening with the clutch lever adjuster until duke's reply. The release arm should rotate freely on the shaft. As you can see, the shaft and arm were lighly rusted together, preventing the fork from rotating away from the throwout bearing. Once the lever came off, the trans easily separated.

Sorry to revive a 6 year old thread, but I'm stuck at this point in splitting the tranny from the engine. What is the name of that tool!!!

I use the air chisel with the pin point. Lesson not completely learned yet. You need to clean the inside of the idler arm and the verticle shaft and lube with antiseize and you ll fall in love with the clutch all over again because now you will have a light clutch pressure and from what you had.
