Back from Monterey and Laguna Seca...some observations of my SC thru 700 miles
I just drove 700 mile in 24 hours...LA to Monterey and back just to give a 15 minute presentation on Prostate Cancer...uggg
But I did get comped a beachfront room...what a view... And my SC did it without a hitch... I treated myself with a visit into Laguna Seca...hoping for some Porsche club action...or some enthusist club...instead I was greeted with CART practice for the season opener...I just got there in time to see Patrick Carpartier coast to a stop in front of me... VERY COOL Hey Jack I guess I was a week too early to see BB run at LS...I saw her at TRE is she all put together? Well Dave is helping me get the 930 calipers on my car...everyone stay tuned for pics of that project!!! Another thing I noticed... My car was running HOT on the way down...up to the second dash mark...but on the way up it never got past the 1st dash...both times were similar weather and similar speed ~80mph-100mph (5th gear 4-5000RPM) But when I opened my heater valves the temp started plumetting...back down to the 1st dash... so basically the heater box around the headers holds in the hot air and this gets trapped in the hose from the engine bay to the HE's... I know pelican has a tech article so they are cracked open a bit even when you put them down...but I think they have to be wide open to get rid of all the heat... Do those heat sheets really work??? I think something that vents the heat out of the heater boxes into the night air or directs it into the cabin would be best...any ideas? The stock set up either keeps it all bottled up in the boxes and hoses or lets it into the cabin... Jack I don't know if you run a heating system...but maybe this contributes to your heat problems... Anyone have similar experiences?? Also on a lonely stretch at 1AM I opened her up to about 120-130 and then the speedo started turning backwards...I had a 85 speedo recalibrated to 170...does this have something to do with this strange behavior...I don't think I was on the rev limiter... Well hopefully I feel up to going to dunkels tomorrow...no more driving!!! MJ Last edited by 82SC; 02-10-2002 at 12:07 AM.. |

You're right. I'm leaving Thursday, the 14th, and tracking the car at Laguna on Friday the 15th.
(I briefly considered also doing a two-day track event out at Pahrump, Nevada, on Saturday and Sunday. It sounded like it could be a mini Open Track Challenge, with two tracks in three days, and about a thousand miles of highway driving -- until my wife pointed out that this was all on Valentines Day weekend. The secret to a happy marriage? You've got to know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. I'll be looking for another date at Pahrump, and making sure there is a date set up with the very supportive wife.)

My brother and I will be at Laguna Seca 16-18 for a Skip Barber open wheel school. Flying into San Fransisco 15th and staying in Carmel later that day. If your going to be in town after that, let me know. It would be nice to meet posters in the flesh.

Stock heating system
If your heater boxes are stock, then when you close them off to the cabin, they should open up to the outside. There should always be air moving through the heat exchangers.
The hot air should come out the two triangular shaped openings. When you pull your heat levers all the way up, then these openings are closed off and heat goes into the cabin.

hmmm...
maybe my cables need adjusting...It was incredible to see the temps drop so fast... could it also be that I think the mixture is off on my car...and doesn't that lead to gas still burning in the exhaust pipes??? MJ |

I've not been willing to do a l-o-n-g road trip in the Targa for one simple reason -- the factory seats get really uncomfortable after 2.5 hours.
I love the feel, sound, and handling of my SC, but would LOVE more comfortable seats. How'd your body do through 700 miles . . . and in what seats? Cheers! C. |

OEM sport seats...not bad at all...except my hamstrings which I hurt a while back...
A summer drive in the targa in the back roads would be gorgeous.... |

I don't get it: the heater box mode doesn't have much to do with the temp of the engine... If the box is open to the air (levers down), then the heat goes out: levers up, the heat is in the cabin.
Unless you have an obsruction in the heater hoses to the bulkhead. If that were the case, then the heat would not exit and you might find air not circulating around the header pipes (essentially backed up). John
