Does anyone know where (website?) there are detailed pictures of the 935 style shifter for the 915? I want to get an idea of how it acomplishes a couple of things.

Thanks, I found that one too. What I am really after is seeing how the reverse lockout mechanism works. I am contimplating fabricating my own version because I don't like how my 915 shifts at all. If it works out I would share my findings with the list and possibly build them for people for a much more reasonable price.

Sorry, can't help you there, but just checked out the beast. Holy S! What are the specs on the motor now? HP/Torque. Sounds great!

Mark,
I am for sure, but, the only one that I found was listed above. And it does not work with the 915..... Randy ------------------ 1978 911 SC |

Has anyone tried the Robotek shifter kit? If so, what is your opinion?

Mark,
Have you seen the ads in Pano and Excellence for 915 tranny and shifter mods? Positive lock-outs, gated shifters and the likes. Race stuff as well. Not cheap, but what is? |

We've been over the Robotek thing--I could accomplish the same with a strategically located rubber band.

I have looked at all the stuff in Pano, Excellence, etc. I think its all too expensive for what you get. Plus, you don't even know if it really works. It all looks like a bunch of band-aids to me with a little snake oil added in.
I researched here and rennlist and know all about the robotec and how they wouldn't lower the price etc. From what I can tell, most people say it does make possitive improvements to the shifting. All it really does is spring load the shift lever to the 3-4 plane helping 2-3 and 5-4 shifts. I have all brand new coupling, bushings, short shift, bla, bla, bla. It still shifts like crap. My tranny is brand new so I know it will get better when broken in. With everything brand new I still have a lot of slop in the shift lever (in the shift tower). The other thing I don't like is how far forward the shifter is. I have to lean forward to shift. Is this just me? The problem with a completely new shifter ala 935 is if you want to move it back you will have interference probs with the e-brake lever but I think I can shorten that. Oh my gawd, it won't be stock again! just shoot me. I might just carefully look at the existing shifting housing and re-do it all with precision rod ends, etc like the 935 and race shifters. I have bigger fish to fry at the moment but it's definately something I'm gunna do. ------------------ Mark The Beast mark@hargett.com |

What kind of short shift kit do you have? I used a Weltermeister and hated it. The stick is too short you have to lean forward to get 5th, and the reverse lockout is all f'ed up etc. I use a stock shifter from a newer carrera on the 915 in my 70t and it works great. I am not sure if you can get the positive feel of a non remote shifter in a 911 no matter how much cash you throw at it. I just make sure the reverse lockout lever is lubed and havehad good luck so far. ALex

Thanks Alex, yes I have the Weltermeistercrapper and not happy with the quality. It's brand new and already has slop. I was thinking about getting a Porsche short shift kit which basically replaces everything but I'll wait to do that until I decide if I'm gunna try to do anything else.

If the lever is too far, you might consider applying some oxy-acetylene heat and bending it to suit you. Because of the reverse gate in a 915 shift housing, you can't just adjust the shift rod at the shift coupling in the tunnel.
If you use a torch, limit the heat to the bend area(s) as the shift bushing is nylon or some other low temp., meltable material. In addition, be careful as many objects inside the car are combustible. Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |

Yes, I am pulled out of my seat to reach 5th gear as well.
There is a bushing that locates the main shaft from the shifter to the tranny. This one is sometimes overlooked. How about racing shifters? Anybody use one? |

915s are and have been always sloppy. However they can take a real beating and still keep shifting (although with difficulty).
I think your shift technique has as much to do with the shifter feel as anything else. The 915 needs a distinct pause between gears. The clutch must be disengaged with authority and not reengaged until firmly in the next gear. I've found that by blipping the throttle slightly past my destination RPM when upshifting helps ease the shift if I'm just putzing around town. When I'm driving b@lls to the wall, however, I never have a problem. I do have to lean forward to get into 5th, and I'm a knuckle-dragger compared to most people. I tried the Weltmeister POS and took it out the day I installed it. ------------------ blue '81 SC Targa |

Mark,
Have you actually disassemled and cleaned your 915 shifter? There are some roll pins and spring washers that are subject to wear. I have disassembeled a couple of them and always found a lack of usable original grease, and significant wear on the spring (wave) washers. I cleaned and degreased everything, then shimmed and repacked with moly grease and the improvement was significant. If you look at the factory short shift kit, you will notice some of the high-wear components are included. Very few of us pn this board ever drove a brand-new 911 with a 915, but I don't think they were as bad as their reputation when fresh and broken-in. And with new bushings, etc. there is no reason to blame the internal parts of a 915 ... they are not that subject to wear, unless at the end of their service life! Perhaps your end to your quest for better shifting is closer than you think! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

You can tighten up the shifter play by using the nut and allen bolt in the shifter tower. Prior to install of dreaded Weltmeister kit I had 6 inches side to side. When I put the kit in I also relubed as Warren indicated and adjusted play to my liking. I am lucky though with "only" having the 4 speed of the 930 ;-) I dont have to worry about upshifts to 5th. Then again I've wear 36 inch shirt sleeve. John 79 930 |
