1988 911 electrical issues

Need some help- My car which is a 1988 911 has some electrical issues. The battery light blinks about every 15 seconds. When I measure with voltage meter on battery it seems the voltage fluxuates between 13.5 and 16.3. I am having a hunting idle which can be kicked down by steeping on accelerator and letting off(not sure if two are seperate issues). Any advice would be great. Also the battery is brand new as well as the neg. battery clamp. Sometimes the car will not start after sitting.

1. Sounds like Alternator ready to go, if your car does not restart even with a new battery your alternator is not recharging. The readings you have is normal for a healthy battery.

2. Hunting could be your ICV needing cleaning, just remove and clean. When it hunts, open the lid and tap on the ICV, it should settle down, an indication of cleaning needed. CHeck the OHMS on the ICV to insure it is still good.

If you have AAA service, they can come out to check your charging system & starter while they are there.

For your battery issue,16.3 volts is not a good thing.I assume that would be with the engine running ?
Most likely a defective voltage regulator as it shouldn't be charging over 13.6 with the engine running.
Your idle has nothing to do with the battery voltage. There are many threads regarding irregular/hunting idle and if you do a search you will find plenty of information as there could be numerous reasons involved !

Cheers !

These cars are famous for the voltage reg. and alternator lasting for 'about' 40K. Mine went 20K. If I remember the numbers, they are about $290 for a rebuilt Bosch and $490 for a new update. Fan, etc. must all be removed. Happy trails.

Mine did the same thing. I didn't waste any time taking it out and giving it to a local guy to rebuild. He had it done in a couple hours and for less than $200. Been perfect ever since.
