Been chasing this for a while in the 74 2.7, occasional stumble, tach would bounce 500rpm up and down, very intermittent. Cleaned connectors, grounds etc, checked for low voltage with no improvement. Tapped on the distributer with a screwdriver by chance and recreated the symptom. Replaced the igniter and the old girl is running as smooth as hundred dollar whiskey. Dont know how old the igniter was but it was installed by the po and I have had the car for 5 years. g | ||

They don't have the best rep for being robust. You're lucky if got you back and didn't strand you. Most users carry a set of points for roadside repairs.

I DON'T AGREE...... I have had excellent service from my Pertronix. 6 years and no problems. I heard they DO have a reputation for robustness. Mine has been great. And what a great improvement over those points and messing with them all the time. Best $100 I ever spent on my 911. That is not to say that they can't fail. CPS [crank position sensors fail on modern cars all the time......and they are basically the same thing at the Pertronix Hall effect sensor system.

I.m happy that you had good use. I just base my opinion on my experiences and anecdotes from other users. Some people hate Optimas and they crash after a year or two.....I'm going on 7 years. YMMV
