Front spoiler without a rear is not an issue. Some have reported instability when the reverse was tried, but I think that you would have to be going mighty fast for it to be an issue(never tried it myself). The f/r combo does help in strong side winds. I never liked the tea tray on a na aspirated car, even though it is the most efficient of the mid year spoilers.. I do agee that the ducktails(also called sugar scoops) look best on pre 74 cars

Mark Wilson 06-26-2002 10:21 AM

And look pretty good on post '73 cars as well. Haven't installed a front chin yet. I can report that my car is marginally but noticably more planted in a groove at speed.

Just for the record, I would have to cast my vote for keeping one's car as close to "period corrct" as possible. therefore I like the ducktails on '74 & earlier and the whaletail on later cars.

Of course Jack's 964 tail on his 3.6 transplant is very ingenious!

In any case, it's all good!

SeaDweller 06-26-2002 06:23 PM

Porsche did offer a factory car (was it a '77???) identical to an SC (flares, rubber accordian bumper setup, etc.) that had a duck tail and Carrera script on the side. Basically, an SC with Carrera script and a duck tail would look 100% identical. You'd be "backdating" the car so-to-speak, but from an aesthetic perspective, who would know?

Hellgate 06-26-2002 06:57 PM

My .02 cents is for period correct. IMHO a turbo tail looks silly on a narrow bodied car with no air dam and chrome window trim. I once saw a '67 912 with a turbo tail, ridiculous.

Bill I have to disagree with you on the down force vs. drag correlation. On the new 996 coupe Porsche reduced lift at the rear axle by 40% and reduced lift at the front axle by 25% with no wings and at the same time keeping the overall vehicle drag at .29 cd.

Ducks with bumpers

How about some pics of the Carrera tail on an early long hood car?

I'm debating the duck / Carrera tail for my '73.

If I go Carrera it will be a one peice fiberglass unit with integral deck lid. I like the early slim Carrera tail, the one with two grills. No black lip, colormatched.

On the track I might augment it with lexan lip extension.

Chuck, if you're interested in an IROC tail, I may be selling the one you saw at Thunderhill, soon. I just ordered a 3.8 RS tail for even more ridiculous amounts of track day downforce (reduced lift... I know, I know).

I have a genuine Porsche Carrera Tail still in the box I bought for my SC. I purchased a cab with a tail so I never put it on. Let me know if you are interested I paid close to 900.00 for but will let is go for aroung 800.00.
Thanks,

Mike

Jack, how many different tails have you had on your car? Not that there's anything wrong with it...

Hi Mike! I might be interested in your Carrera tail...does it come with the appropriate hardware, and can you post some pictures?
Thanks...Keith

Jim,

I'm afraid that I buy decklids like Imelda Marcos buys footwear.

I've got:

1) the stock lid
2) the ducktail
3) the 964 retractable, and
4) a full-on factory Turbo tail (still haven't tried fitting it, since it was from a weak moment where I was considering an aftermarket turbo package).

For the recent Open Track Challenge, I got

5) an IROC tail

And I recently scored

6) a carbon fiber RS 3.8 tail for a good price on ebay, which I'll probably extend up to the roofline for maximum freaking downforce on very important trips to the track (at least on the days when I don't care about people pointing and chuckling).

Are there any important tails that I've missed?

Since the first step is admitting you've got a problem, I'll tell you all that I hope to get down to the 964 tail for the street, the ducktail for R-Gruppe-style historical stuff, and the 3.8 RS tail for the track. Then I'll sell the other three. Honest I will.

Jim Richards 06-27-2002 10:25 AM

Jack, I've got a black 993 tail (stock electrically operated type). You wanna swap tails sometime? Imagine a ducktail 993...

Innocent Lil' ducktail

. . now known as a "gateway-tail"
Some people can stop before the electric lift tails,
while others go even further to "graduate" to Wings
Oh the humanity :D

Anyone got a pic of a duck tailed cabriolet?

Jack,

You could probably rent some of those tails out on special occasions and such!:D

Cheers!

very nice pics of the p-cars with ducks and bumpers.

epbrown 06-27-2002 01:07 PM

Yep - I like the ducktail on SC and Carrera bodies, though the Carrera tail is nice as well. The turbo tails are too overwhelming without the exaggerated fenders of the turbo or wide-body kit.

Hi,

Someone asked about an early car with later style tail.

Which is better?

I like the duck tail because it's light and I can keep it on for vintage events. May add a plexiglass removeable extension on it for PCA racing.
