Leave Exhaust Studs & SSIs

To address an oil leak I removed the exhaust system from the car. It is an 83 SC with 47K on it. I had no problem removing the heat exchanger nuts and 8 of the studs came out with the nuts. I have removed one additional stud using the double nut technique but am stuck on the next one.

Is it important to remove all the studs? Before I try more aggressive removal I thought I would check. My understanding is the progressively aggressive steps are heat, extractor which I presume destroys the stud, and finally drilling.

Thoughts from those with experience are appreciated!

Having removed the exhaust system I am also curious about replacing with SSI. Not that there appears to be anything wrong with the existing system, but I really haven't had to spend anything on this car. Are SSI's truly an upgrade?

Thanks

Rob

SSI's are a great upgrade but you should backdate the heat system to make it work well. If the old studs are still in there and look good, and you are not prepared to drill out the broken studs correctly than let sleeping dogs lye. You are already 90% better than 60% of people that attempt this change. Most break off several (I did) doing this.

Like Jame said, your are ahead of a lot of people.

2 of mine came out with the nut, 2 broke at the nut.

I got 9 out using a stud puller (straight type) on the air gun by stepping from 20 pound to 30 pound and they came out at 40.

The last one broke flush to the casing. I drill it out but end up screwing the tap so today I installed a Time-sert, work like a charm.

I'll be doing a posting shortly about the Time-sert; see Post 26 of Help... Exaust Stud Drilling

All out

Thanks guys.

I was able to get the remaining studs out. A couple of heat cycles, more penetrating oil followed by three nuts put on with the impact driver and then I was able to back the studs out. SSI and an M&K will be ordered tomorrow.

So all 12 came out with no breakage. I put that down to the largely dry life this car has had and nightly penetrating oil applications for a week before I tried to remove them.

Why are you removing the studs instead of just the nuts?

hmmm... 8 of 12 came out with the nuts. From reading other threads is seems to be the thing to do. Allows me to reconnect with new studs and new anti seize.
Having said that the studs were in pretty good shape with only some corrosion in the base. More corrosion was evident with the nuts, but some were probably reusable.
