87 Carrera gas leak

My beloved Carrera has a slow gas leak up front. It looks like it is dripping in the midline of the car just towards the rear of the gas tank area. Not a gush, about a quarter cup or so overnight. I siphoned the tank but haven't really looked yet. Is there an easily replaced line there? In my service manual it looks like there is a short rubber fuel line up front coming directly off the tank, has anyone replaced this? I have done enough things to know it is never as easy as it looks. Any tips?

all the rubber fuel hoses on carreras need to be checked regularly for cracks. get the metal cover plate off and have a look. that's where the fuel pump is.

Thanks, sounds pretty straight forward. Is this a special part? Or can it be replaced by regular rubber fuel line I can buy at the local auto parts store? I have replaced the fuel lines in the engine compartment but never even thought there were others to consider.

isn't that fuel hose from the fuel pump routed through the tunnel towards the rear? Looks like a PITA to me.

I was hoping there is a short rubber section between the fuel pump and the center tunnel line, and that it is not a special part type of line. Does anybody know? I guess I'll find out sooner or later.....

You can just replace the flexible parts up front. PITA but can be done, do search, there are several threads on this.

it's a one piece nylon line with the front rubber section crimp collared on. you may get lucky and find the tank to pump hose is the culprit.

Is the one piece nylon line available or do I have to recreate it? Can it be replaced with regular fuel line and a clamp?

I am doing a "while you're in there" maintenance project. My fuel pump is 25 years old along with all the hoses, the front control arm bushings, etc. The motor is out for some other stuff in the back and have the whole front end out. For my fuel related projects, I am replacing both through the tunnel lines with OEM parts from our host, the fuel pump, draining and cleaning the tank, and any other rubber part.

I don't have access issues because I pulled the rack out to rebuild and regrease it. As John suggested maybe you will lucky and the tank to pump line only will be bad. It's a good probability that all are in similar condition regardless of which are leaking.

It's going to be a pain even with everything opened up, but if you need to replace the through the tunnel lines while lying on your back, plan to beat your knuckles and fingers up. Access up and over the rack to the pump while working around A/C and brake lines is.....limited.

Hope your pain is minimal.

PS - the tank to pump line is available in 1 meter lengths for $38/mtr from host. OEM part is 999 181 168 50. It's a 12 x 18.5 hose.

the line is available, but it's not a nice job. i've used marine rated fuel hose which is considerably thicker/tougher along with double marine heavy duty crimp clamps on each end, leaving the nylon piece in place and dealing with the rubber part in front. just be careful.

Thanks for tips all. Sounds like this could get interesting. I especially will note the "just be careful" from John. Sometimes things like this make me want to get a new Cayman! Nothing sounds like that older engine though.....Wish me luck

Had my rubber stuff replaced (repaired) recently,..fresh fuel pump. Wrench was able to repair leaky line (rubber) without having to deal with the tunnel stuff. It was the high pressure side, in my case....still, we replaced all the rubber lines up front.
