Porsche Crest Recommended Long Hood 911 Books (videos?)

My lovely girlfriend took me to Portland for the weekend for my 40th Birthday this past weekend and we spent a lot of time in Powell's Bookstore and I ran across a couple gems stuffed between the normal schlock celebrating Porsche in pictures and with text fit for a 13yo. Great if you are a kid but lacking if you want to find out the dirt and details of how the mark came to be or in my case, I want to know the life and story of the 911, especially the pre 1973 cars.

The 2 book/s that I found that seemed to offer up a truly definitive history in pictures & text of the development and race history were these two books-

Porsche 911, The Definitive History 1963 to 1971 by Brian Long

The Porsche Book 3 Volume Set: The Complete History of Types and Models by Jurgen Barth & Gustav Busing

I tried to search 'recommended books' on the BBS but didn't come up with much. Do you all have comments on these two books? What are your recommendations for early 911's books/vids that you could use for a reference if restoring or building a early 'rep' race car or to just bone up on Porsche history.

I have heard 'Excellence was Expected' bandied about but have never seen it.

@ RWebb- Sure! I am curious for myself but others might find this thread useful. Thanks Webb for the info. I will look it up.

@ archtech- Yes, that is curious that the history didn't continue to 1973 1/2 before switching to the short hood's. This is why I need to read more! I don't know off hand what if any particular changes there were between 71 and 72...the external oil filler door in 72?

This video on youtube is part 1 of 10. It is a 1970 targa restoration. German with no subtitles. I think all ten are out there. Pretty cool.

YouTube - Restoration of a Porsche 911 Targa 1970 (Part 1-10)

I have seen the video on torrent sites.

Comparison Tests:
R&T, June 1969 – Four Luxury GT’s, p. 52 – 911T rated higher than XKE, Corvette (except on engine), or MB 280SL – owner’s images characterized, and a Porsche owner is overly “serious,” not a swinger, and has a “limited sense of humor”
Motor Trend, July 1971 – 911 vs. Dino – 911 build quality superior; 911 has classic economy of line vs. Italian trick stuff like curves and bulges and flares and scoops. Dino feels completely neutral and can drive deeper into corners than can the 911, but the 911 is much easier to go fast with comfortably right from the start. Thus, the Dino has only a barely perceptible higher cornering velocity. Both use Porsche synchronizers, but Dino is stiff and gate is too wide. 911 has effortless gear changes up and down but vague pattern. 911 is best – more of a road car/racer, while Dino is more of a show car/racer.
Motor Trend, May 1970 - Corvette vs. Porsche 911, page 76-78, 116- – Corvette as fast as 911 through the corners; but Porsche Quality still conquers

Webb, Excellent list and thank you for sharing! People like yourself are big help to newbies like myself and why I like these 'old cars' more and more. The people tinkering, using and 'abusing' these cars are great!

Bryan,
Here are some of the books that I have found to be useful reference books. The 1st three are must haves. Combine these with the factory workshop manuals, Haynes, etc. and you have a great DIY starter set.

Bruce Anderson: Porsche 911 Performance Handbook
Wayne Dempsey: 101 PROJECTS
Wayne Dempsey: HOW TO REBUILD AND MODIFY PORSCHE 911 ENGINES 1966-1989.
Lindsay Porter & Peter Morgan: Porsche 911 Purchase and Restoration Guide
Peter Morgan: Original Porsche 911

Regards,

Al

Bryan,

this may also be useful to you:

Long term & Commonly Neglected Maintenance

You want to get the car's regular maintenance taken care of, then do the "long-term" things, esp. safety related ones like new rubber brake hoses, tires; then all new fluids, susp. bushings, etc.

Best wishes
