Emotional and financial value of factory tool kits?

Some people seem to love these things and some hate them........certainly some of you guys have an opinion. In a recent ebay review, a single Klein screw driver was bidding at near 160 bucks!! What gives?

I had the factory tool kit in my 72 E and thought most of the tools, which were the originals, to be fairly cheap pieces of crap. I replaced most of them with higher quality pieces. I guess I'm just not that sentimental.

My guess would be concourse freaks.

The only tools I have used from my factory kit are the spark plug thingy, and the spanner wrench for turning the fan belt.

Their only value is in the fact that one's car is complete and original, down to the tool pouch. In themselves, the tools are good but no more. I have replaced most of them with Hazet and Stahlwille items, which are way better. Still it is good to know that you have the orginals somewhere.
The market for these things is a buyer's one, as these things are worth anything between a fortune and nothing.
Case in point: a mechanic I know had SO MANY of the 2.4 S steel front valences that he put them in the hole under the concrete where a guy was building a pool in his garden.... Makes me weep today...

I recall a post by someone who uses a scrappy kit for his car and keeps the *good* one inside the house in a safe!

That could have been my post... but I'm not that anal. I ended up w/ 2 kits after an insurance "thingy". I keep the old tarnished one in the car, and leave the shiny new one in a box in my basement.

btw, the cost for the toolkit 911-721-002-14 was $350.40 ( this was in '99). Scary huh?

I have never had a tool kit for my car since I bought it in 1995. It is an 88 model. Priced one used once for 175 bucks. Fortunately the car has never let me down so I just use the tools in my tool box at home. However, I would like to put together a tool pouch to keep in the car. Can anyone list what the factory tool kit has in it so that I can do just that?

Thanks all!
Mark

My factory tool kit (complete) has the best spark plug wrench in the world, for my car. The spanner is also quite useful. The rest of the tool kit is near useless.

Can you buy just the sparkplug wrench ? That's the only thing want out of kit.

I pieced mine together from various classifieds, swap meets and ebay and was able to put together almost a complete kit for about $75. All it took was time and patience.

Now having done it I must admit I really don't use them except for the plug wrench and spanner. Oh well, it just adds to the value of my car, right?

I found an almost complete one for $20 on EBay about a year ago, the seller had misspelled Porsche

Thanks to that I now have the tools I needed.

The rest I make up with other brands

The 356 boys are *very* concerned with correct tool kits.
The old wooden handled screwdrivers that came with 356 tool kits can get the big bucks you mentioned.

Emotional value? Well, I don't sleep with my car's original & complete tool kit. Financial value? Well, since I have it, and it's paid for, why sell? It would be a total b**ch to replace... Though it wasn't metioned, how about functional value? Snap-on would cost less and function better. Not to mention the excellent S-K tool line that Wayne now sells..

Shawn, that's a good trick to use on eBay. "Porsche" is spelled several different ways in postings. Every now and then I find something interesting with no other bidders.

With regard to this topic:

I used the fuses in the original blister pack of five. No concours for me.

Trivia Question: I have two tool kits for Carrera. Identical except one has a grey plastic tag sewn into an outer seam and the other has a yellow tag. No writing on either. What does it mean?

Pardon my ramblings. Brain not awake.

I think mine has a blue tag sewn into a brown vinyl bag. What year is this supposed to be from. I bought it on eBay awhile back.

Bill...funny way to make a good point. Even though the factory tool kit wrenches are (for the most part) made by Hazet, they are NOT what I would consider top quality tools. For road trips, I carry a tool roll, full of mostly craftsman stuff.
