No, it's already done!

JHanson 03-22-2011 12:00 PM

I'm very interested in this discussion. My 1982 SC consistently gets 25-plus mpg on the highway, and I'd hate to give that up to the extent I've been led to believe carbs would affect it.

On the other hand, I've had several fiddly issues with the CIS - failure to idle at 8,000 feet one trip (adjusted), the throttle plate spontaneously knocked out of whack on another trip, causing horrible running (fixed in California), occasional goofy floating idle (800-1200-800-1200) that makes people next to me at traffic lights look at me like I'm a moron. So I'm always a bit leery of the system. Combined with the decreasing availability of expensive replacement parts, it has me wondering.

I'd be willing to bite the bullet for an EFI kit that would solve the strange running problems, gain a bit of horsepower, and retain most of the fuel economy, but so far every product seems to have some significant drawbacks - there's apparently no simple, user-friendly, plug-and-play kit. The Bitz looks attractive, but some say the software is out of date.

Any other EFI kits to consider?

James Brown 03-22-2011 12:09 PM

2 pipelines, one is the hardware (Bitz kit, PMO EFI, 3.2 intake, or other high end injectors) and the other, that is not included in most kits, is the computer control module and the software. The 2nd can cause some headaches if you DIY. Plug and play ones are expensive. Many examples on here just search for EFI install.

Cis is nice if you just simply satisfied with what you have, sometime can be a ***** to tune... pmo/carbs to me give you the same or better performance, the only problem with carbs, depending on the climate and altitude they always need to be tune in order to keep performance, but there's nothing sweeter than wot sound...my 2 cents...

With gas expected to hit $5.00 a gallon this summer I cannot blame you.

WVU 911 03-23-2011 02:12 AM

Thank you all for the input, what kind of gas mileage can you expect from carbs? its not a daily driver so i'm not to overly concerned with it, thanks

VFR750 03-23-2011 03:26 AM

Zeniths: 14mpg city. Maybe 20mpg highway. 8.5mpg track ;)

Driver_X 03-23-2011 05:33 AM

I've been getting around 16-17 mpg 'round town and I got almost 19 with a mix highway with a little stop & go. I think on a long drive 20mpg might be doable. Webers on a 2.7.

Scott R 03-23-2011 05:51 AM

Other than if it's running correctly, I really could care less about the mileage on my 911. To me it's a sunny day car.

SCrescue 03-23-2011 08:16 AM

17 to 20 mpg with carbs...

James Brown 03-23-2011 11:39 AM

Cost of conversion-$3-6k, cost of fuel mileage-8-13 mpg, cost to tune-$1k, coat of hitting the on ramp in 2nd and going through the gears, priceless.

James

That seem high for carbs. I agree with the $1,000 for a decent tune but the rest?
Am I missing something?

with the extras as recommended from the PMO site, James' numbers are correct using all new stuff

$4000 PMO kit
$500 dizzy recurve
$1500 SSI's
$200 MSD ignition

sc_rufctr 03-23-2011 12:15 PM

I didn't realize how expensive the carbs alone were.

Joe Bob 03-23-2011 12:19 PM

Webers used.....2500-3000 for a REALLY good set. PMOs are new and have a lot of upgrades. One issue is, you will not be able to talk to them. Fax communications only. No phone no email.

They are a quality build and really pretty to look at.

Zeniths are cheap but not real easy to get parts for and you are limited on size to 40s. You can get cheap Webers but likely need a rebuild or a bushing redo. It's a crap shoot.

Choose your poison.

Joe Bob,

I politely disagree, I have talked to Richard (PMO) by phone on several occasions. He is very accessible and courteous and answers all of my stupid questions. If you fax him your phone number he will call you back. Once you have his product you will have his continued support.

I have even got a call back from him on the weekend.

Shane

Good for you....he's changed his policy.

James Brown 03-23-2011 03:47 PM

He will talk to you if you are a customer, just can't spend all his time with fence sitters. But way helpful if you have some of his products. It's a one man show, he could spend hours talking to everyone that just needed info. I like his fax first policy.

moneymanager 03-23-2011 04:07 PM

+1. He has spent at least an hour on the phone helping me deal with accelerator pump issues. Extremely helpful to customers.

RoninLB 03-23-2011 04:29 PM

as silly as this may sound...
Richard is very thoughtful dealing with customer's issues.
