Car looks like a late sc but its a 2.7 1977. It's a looker, not a runner though. I have a 930 engine going in so i dont want to throw a lot of dough at it but want this sorted before I pull that lump out and swap it.

Your starter could be going.
Had this happened last summer. Nothing, wait 15 minutes and would start or start right away using the "going down the hill/release the clutch technique

quattrorunner - when I seen the topic of this thread, i could not resist:
Maryland man glued to Wal-Mart toilet seat (CNN) -- Police in Maryland are on the hunt for the perpetrator of what appears to be an April Fools' prank that left a man glued to a toilet at a Wal-Mart store. If caught, the jokester who doused the seat with glue at the Elkton Wal-Mart on March 31 could face second-degree assault charges, said Lt. Matthew Donnelly of the Elkton Police Department. Police, along with the Singerly Fire Company and the Cecil County Paramedics, were called to the scene at about 7 p.m. There, they found the 48-year-old victim, who called for help after realizing the sticky situation he was in when he tried -- and failed -- to stand up and leave the superstore's restroom, Donnelly said. It took responders 15 minutes to remove the victim from the stall, but they were unable to disconnect the toilet seat from his body, Donnelly said. Instead, the victim was taken to Union Hospital of Cecil County, where the seat was detached. He left with only minor injuries to his buttocks, Donnelly said. Police do not suspect that the victim was specifically targeted, but that the incident was a random prank, Donnelly said. They have not received reports of glue-laden toilet seats since.

I had an SC that would flood out about 30 min of sitting. Turned out that my cold start injector was shooting gas all the time for some reason. Replaced that and viola. It would start just fine in the morning or after sitting for several hours.
Since yours is turning over but not starting...this might be a place to look. Next time it happens, take the snorkel and air cleaner out and gently hold down the arm to the air-plate thingy and see if it helps to get the car started.

oh...and I fogot to add that you can disconnect the cold start injector. there are 2 wires on the driver's side chain housing just left of the distributor. just pull these off to disable

I would look at the fuel accumulator. Had a very similar thing happen to my 83SC last year. It would work fine for a while than all of a sudden would just crank and crank but wouldn't start. Would get it towed to the dealer or shop and miraculously it would start right up. Turned out to be a back accumulator.

More detailed symtom is that it cranks fine(good starter) fires initially (some fuel, maybe not enough) and then will loose all ignition and quit the almost perfect starting cycle( ignition related?). I Have to think it might be the permatune? Anyone with experience there? I'm about to swap that out tonight as I have a new MSD and blaster coil as well as new plug wires. We will see.

1sr rule of faultfinding... Only swap 1 thing at the time., it could save you a lot of headache in more complex problem. In your case, since you are upgrading at the same time, start with swapping the wires and see what happened. Then swap the coil and see what happened and finally installed the MSD. If your problem get fix at least you will know what failed you and trough it out, you can keep the other one for future faultfinding or sell them. Good luck.
