Who bought the black '83sc in Dayton, OH I was about to buy?!!

Car bought straight out from under me by Pelican here, no PPI, never seen other than pics. I'm wondering if I should continue to discuss my finds here anymore

Whoever u are, I hope you don't bastardize it...such a nice car in its stock form...

seller only told me it was a pelican. He didnt know I was one too. I begged this guy to let me put a deposit on it so I could get it inspected..and the buyer must have been informed of this.

What bad karma? Cash talks. Some sellers don't take deposits.

I had a guy a few weeks ago with the sketchiest craigslist ad I have ever seen, but the price was right. On Tuesday I told him I'd see him Saturday with cash and a trailer. He said great, see you then. Later that day he calls back and says "I am getting buried in calls, can you just overnight me a deposit so I can pull the ad??" So I just said no (remember, spidey-sense was pegged), but I'll be there tomorrow with the cash - just as fast as a deposit could get there. Drove the 500 miles the next morning. Go figure, the car and the guy were legit. He says well, seems like you're a 911 guy, I have another one besides this one - want it too? I took a look and said YEP I'll be back tomorrow. Came back and ended up with two 911s for my trouble.

Cash - and quick action - win the day, especially when deposits aren't on the table. I'm not buying this bad karma stuff. That being said, sorry you missed out. There are plenty of fish in the sea though.

Is it possible the other buyer found it on his own? I assume the seller was advertising it. There seem to be plenty for sale so you should be able to find what you want...good luck!!

Sure, cash talks and perhaps the buyer is separate from this circumstance, but it is very unusual for things to fall in this manner without any intervention from a stealth buyer.

I'd say the seller is the real dbag, he could have declined the second buyer's offer until he heard back from you. Sounds like you were done in by a higher offer.

I had this happen with a dealer even after I had made a deposit, really got me going as well.

My reference was more along the lines of someone asking on this forum about a car they found and are interested in and then a lurker reads the post, figures out the details, and snakes the car out from under the person who found ther car.

That is different from several people seeing the same ad and looking at the same car. In that case the first one with cash wins.

Unfortunately, the OP will probably never know if the person who bought the car stumbled on the same ad as he did or was snaked.

And a seller is always going to take the cash out of a hand that doesn't ask for a PPI first as an ease and self protection measure. If you want it that bad you have to take the gamble or know you might miss one.

seller point of view: Why run the risk of a PPI turning up something you didn't know was wrong and now your already devalued 911 is justifiably negotiated farther down.

I missed out on a nice SC400 like this a couple years ago, talked to him the night before, someone 1/2 hour before me the next morning showed up w/ cash in hand while I had to wait till Monday to get funds, just the breaks.

As a seller over 35 years of almost everything, do you know how many phone calls and "checks in the the mail" buyers I dealt with, ..............he doesn't know you from adam and he wants to sell HIS car now, first cash and its a done deal, moving on.

So if you had a car and you had someone who might buy it based on a PPI and another showed up with your asking price in cash... you'd decline the cash? Are you kidding me? 95% of the people who call and "promise" to buy the car are tire kickers who have no interest in buying the car. Im just sayin...
Lots of cars for a great price right now. Im sure you will find a good one. Good luck. Its worth the wait.

I guess from your original post that you are wondering if maybe you shouldn't share your findings here on Pelican. I'm thinking that, had it been me, maybe a little more on the hypothetical side about your PPI questions and a little less detail of location. If it's really a good deal you'll want to keep that to yourself as everyone is looking for the "good" deal. I wouldn't hold it against the buyer who recognized a good deal and risked the unknowns without a PPI nor would I hold it against the seller; he just want's the car gone.

I think maybe the seller owes you the courtesy of matching the guy that's buying the car "out from under you" but that's where it ends. It's a first come first served world in the used car / parts market. Had it been me selling I would have called you and said I have a guy with cash in hand, if you want it you called first but you'll have to match his offer and terms.

I've been first in line on used parts and missed on the purchase because of various reasons. That's life; another nine-eleven will come along.

+1

All about risk vs reward. Buyer felt for the price, the risk was acceptable vs you needing a PPI prior to purchasing. Nothing you can do about it now. bird in hand for the seller...

Lots of good 911s out there for decent money, be prepared to move quickly, have your PPI shop prepared etc.

I always offer a refundable $500 24hr hold deposit, seller won't always accept it but worth trying IMO.

Still the risk/reality of someone showing up with cash to close the deal without delay/PPI. That's the way it is...

I still urge you to continue to get a PPI done prior to any purchase...

Bottom line ... the seller is a douche bag and if somebody used your details and information to go scoop the car from under your feet, well F**K him too !!!
I hope his car turns into a pumpkin at midnight

I'm sorry if i offend the tender hearts out there, but integrity is not something everybody is born with ...

Cheers !
