what company made 911 bodies other than karmann or porsche?
saw in a thread that some early ('69-'73) bodies were made by a company other than porsche... what other companies made bodies and how can you tell who made the body? were the parts stamped by karmann and sent to the porsche factory to be assembled? sorry for the ignorance, but can someone straighten me out as to this? thanks.

Reutter Karosserie made Porsche bodies, but at some point in history Porsche bought the company. I think (?) it was when the 911 came along.
Anyway it was something about Reutter having to retool and expand which they couldn't afford. Herr Roland Kunz - erklären Sie bitte...? ![]() |

Reutter Karosserie however kept a contract with Porsche to supply the seats in the car. Thus the acronym ReCaro.
If you look at the end of an adjustment knob in a long hood car with original seats you will see the styleized name embossed on it. |

actually fellas, i mean production bodies, not race cars or prototypes. a thread not long ago referred to a '70T that had Karmann coachwork. my question is how can you tell if a body was made by Porsche or by, say, Karmann? I am familiar with the Reutter badges on the 356 and Karmann badges on Ghias and such. what gives it away for the 911?
p.s. the tidbit on recaro above is great! didn't know that. |

I think the VIN tells you that - at least whether it's a Porsche or Karmann body:

Bertone made a gorgeous one off roadster based on the 911. It used to live in California.
