Valvolie dion oil with ZDDP additve a good mix?

I was looking around the other day and came across Valvoline 10W-40 dino/conventional oil, decent price for sure. I figured it might be a good choice (still carries "SL" as part of its rating) when thoroughly mixed (gallon) with a little bottle of STP Oil Treatment (stated "ZDDP additives"). Sound reasonable? Any thoughts? I don't really want to dig back into the oils "mega thread", lol...though I might.

Seems like people like the Valvoline VR1 non synthetic. I think it's on sale now at Autozone.

The mega thread is where the info is though.

Two more days to go on the Autozone sale, ending April 4. I just loaded up yesterday for $2.50/quart for Valvoline 20W50 Racing. The guy at the store hadn't noticed the price deal before and said it was currently the cheapest oil in the store.

No. if its non-VR1 it is no good. VR1 comes in 20w50, straight 50, 10w30, straight 30, straight 40, and straight 60.

Youd probably need 8-10 bottles of STP to bring that convential oil to the level of VR1. You need VR1.

Id also not use anything but 20w50 unless you are driving in Alaska.

The other thing to consider that is also in the mega thread is that there is alot more to the equation that ZDDP. You need to look at the entire additive package, and its relationship to the base stocks. These oils are well researched and blended so that you get the performance you desire. Tossing in a bottle of STP doesnt get it done. Could actually to more harm than good...

The VR1 is on sale for $2.50 a qt. Cant beat that!

Ok, not to start a oil mud slinging tread but I just had my tranmission done by Orbit Racing in Palm Beach Florida. Rodger, the owner has several Rolex races and wins under his belt, so when I gave him my Brad Penn oil when he also adjusted my valves he said he has heard of the oil but his race cars all use Castrol dino 20-50 w and has never had an issue!

Lenny,

From what I can gather Castrol is ok but breaks down quickly and looses the "good stuff". For race cars, this is not a big deal as they get their oil changed for every race. For us who go 3-4000+ mile plus on an oil change, not so good.

Are you guys having a hard time finding the VR1 oil? Let me tell you I did. Had to go to 8 different stores before I found some.

Harry, thats what I was thinking also but when I mentioned zinc and all it seemed of no care to him, it was Mobil 1 in the newer cars and Castrol 20-50 in our types. And you are right, I think when you are rebuilding engines after two races it does not matter.

I wouldn't provide the engine with ANY additives,...get the right oil from the get-go, (with all the right (amount of) stuff) and all will be just fine......

...no aditives (for me, that is...)

The Autozone website notes that any order over $100 gets free shipping. Haven't tried it, but if you can't find any locally, that may be a way to go. So far I've emptied the 2 stores local to me of their 20w-50. When is hard-to-find oil ever going to be $2.50/quart again?

Geez, I don't know Nesslar, give it a try and report the results.

My buddy used the conventional Valvoline without zddp and he had tons of shavings on the magnet.

While they claim free shipping, that doesn't apply to chemicals which includes lube oil which they cannot/will not ship due to fed. regs or something. I then placed an order at my local store that showed no stock hoping for satisfaction at a later date. In the meantime, I raided a neighboring Autozone for the few bottles they had there. A few hours later, I received a call from the first store confirming they had my order waiting for me. It seems the mgr. went to other stores and gathered the necessary bottles to fill my order. That was great customer service, but then again, it was a late Sat. when store traffic is normally slow.

As an option, the Advanced Auto parts chain (if in your area) also carries VR-1 20W-50 (dino oil).

Hope this helps,
Sherwood
