Help with Steering Wheel Recover

OK, did search and can't seem to figure this out. Got a steering wheel cover from our host (actually Alan Gunn I believe) for my 4 spoke '88 Carrera wheel. I'm struggling with a couple of issues...First, do I need to remove the foam rubber surround on the back/column of the wheel? It seems like you need to remove it to get the "center" leather sections to attach. Second, how do you trim up the center section pieces to have a nice seam where it meets the out/wheel section? The center pieces I got seem much larger that what is on the wheel originally so I assume its going to have to be trimmed. Finally, I don't see any way to reproduce the decorative stitching at the back of the center sections...I may just skip that unless someone has a trick to make it look good. I can see it coming out looking not so good.
Thanks for any suggestions...
