Audio Install Experts -- 'radio mute' line
Hello all,
I need help/advice on new head unit install. Just bought a Blaupunkt Toronto BT400 and will install in my 83 SC --- replacing an old (80's???) Kenwood w tape deck. In the wire harness coming out of the New Blaupunkt, there is a 'radio mute' line. Where/what do I connect this line??! NOTE: this is a bluetooth unit with musoc stream and phone BT capability. Your expert advice is greatly appreciated!!! |

In some radios it is used for different purposes. Mostly its used for external car phones or cell phone booster kits. When the phone rings the lead is grounded to mute wire on the radio so the user can hear the in coming call by muting the radio. Also used for an "add on" blue tooth kit that is hardwired to your exsisting radio in the car so the system works hand in hand. On factory type radios the car will pulse the mute wire on the radio when the car is in an accident( when airbags deploy). No need to hook it up on a basic install or even if the headunit has a optional BT unit or an eternal one. Cap the wire off or just tape it up. Hope this helps.....

Jetstar ---
Thanks for clear explanation of what the radio mute line is used for and how to deal with it. Very much appreciated! Yes --- I am doing a very basic install --- 4 stock speakers and power antenna for now. Eventually, I may get a powered sub ti slide under the front passenger seat just to fill up the bass (but not to 'make it go boom') |

Got it all wired-up, reconnected the neg terminal @ battery, fired up the engine, pushed the big 'Blaupunkt' blue button.
We have hi-fi! What a great feeling! Thanks to jetstar on the radio mute advice! Still have to bolt it in and secure it, then test all functions. I noticed that the head unit has a terminal/wire that us supposed to connect to car/dash lighting. However I left that unconnectex since I did not know where to connect to. Prev head unit did not have the lighting wire. After ignition start I did get lights on the head unit! Any ideas why there's a specific wire for lighting? |

OK --- all wires connected and bracket/harnesses secured!
At the beginning it appeared that the memory/battert line (always 'hot" line) was not connected to the a lead that is connected to the battery ---- as the preset memory was lost. However, it may have been that I reset the unit. Anyway, it looks like a good install. One issue now I have is that my clock (the car dashboard clock --- not the radio clock) only runs when the engine/ignition is on. I know I'll have to find the clock wire/line and connect to the "always hot" line that leads to the battery. What color wire should I be looking for ---- the one that comes out of the clock? Thanks! |
