Porsche Crest 1976 911 wiring HELP

Hey i got this 1976 911s Targa about 2 years ago and im on a tight budget and have only had time and money to replace the blown 2.7l for a nice 3.2l out of an 86. Next project will be to fix the wiring. the red + power wire that connects to the dash fried and scared the crap out of me about 3 weeks ago. i replaced it but still feel at unease. I would like to re-wire this car but cant find much info or kits to help me do so. Can you give me some tips and prices for a project like this. AND if i were to get it done professionally will 1000$ get me anywhere.
Thanks,

PS, only the speedometer works...

I can provide you with a wiring diagram. You should be able to find replacement wire locally or on the internet. But do you know why the wires fried?

Hi Rick_pic, and welcome.
All I have is a set of opinions if you don't mind.
I don't have an idea on the cost for a pro - but if you got someone, make sure he is a pro with p-car experience.
Or, see if you could get a replacement harness (salvage), or get a lot of wire markers/labels (1/4 inch hi) and trace and mark each wire, and repair/replace as necessary. In essence, try it yourself.

From the pics, I agree it really needs to be addressed, especially in the trunk.
Get the PET and replace the parts as needed and anchor down that relay block (1st pic - what is that for?) and the other device (2nd pic - single can relay or RF filter?).

The PET or the electrical diagrams will help you bundle accordingly. The PET would id the bundle/harness, and the electrical diagram would tell you each wire by color. I have an electrical background, and have never had to do this, but it is how I would approach it.

Disconnecting the battery is always wise as a few ckts are hot.

Find someone parting a 76 or a dismantler and tell him you need the dash wiring for a 76. The factory manual has a very nice schematic, in color.
It is a separate harness with a few connections to the fuse blocks. Remove the blower housing under the cowl and everything is right there. I ve seen shops that remove the whole harness to redo the car so I know it can be done.

hey guys, thanks for helping me out. Ya i have no idea what that is in the first pic and i have tried to trace it but had no luck. J_mancini, it would be great if you can hook me up with that diagram cuz the one im using from this site doesn't really seem to be the same. Also i would like to mention that none of the wire on the fuse block run to what the fuse box cover says, its completely messed up.

Also steely, i am ok at working on cars, i rebuilt my truck ( engine rebuild) myself but im only 19 and dont have much experience myself. I have been looking for a harness but the problem is that i dont want to just replace it with the same thin wire that these cars have issues with. also some of the tings you mentioned are like Chinese to me lol. I went to see a professional Porsche guy today and offered him 1000$ cash and he said ill do some looking but he didnt want to touch it. I cant afford to give him more because im a student going to college and that means im broke. i spent all of my savings on this thing so i kinda have no choice but to do it myself. also i think there is a drain somewhere:P so if you guys ever here someone that has there hand on a harness dont forget about me ill be online everyday. Thanks

ok Rick_pic, yeah save your money and hold off on the pro for now.

Suggest you do as Flat6pac says and search for a Porsche dismantler / salvage yard (online) for the dash wiring.

Search here (Pelican posts) for the PET katalog (spelled with the k) - a thick pdf of exploded views of the car assy with full parts lists. you should find a link here to somewhere else on the web for your '77.

That relay brick doesn't look original at all - one guess is after market alarm - quite a mess (of interlocks) and I am out of my league on the subject.

Please be patient with her if you try it yourself - and good luck.
There is a literal TON of info here on this site, but you have to search unfortunately.

you should hear from others smarter than me.

on edit: found this - download PET for your year from here:
