So these Dansk dual in single out's, aren't they listed as for 1974 cars? Mine's an 85. Will it still fit on the headers on my car properly?? For 480 I'd be willing to try.

Not sure what your budget is, but for me, the best sounding (not too loud or soft) single outlet exhaust is the following.

Find yourself a Dansk single outlet twin inlet sport exhaust.
They really sound great.
Factory, but with a bit of a deeper tone.
The host site here sells one for $480.
Used ones come up rarely on eBay.

Personally I think you'll be disappointed with the sound (and performance) of a capped off twin outlet M&K unit.
But it might be worth a try.
The single M&K's still quite loud as well.
Monty's are great, but even the single outlets are quite loud (had one on my 75 US Carrera for awhile, then ditched it....drove me crazy).

I am pretty sure that is the model I have on my SSI's so I would say "yes." But call the guys at Pelican and make sure when you place your order.

FWIW here's a link to a new one on Ebay. If anyone knows if this would fit on a Carrera with headers, feel free to chime in ;)

Funny how every week there seems to be someone posting about an M&K being to loud. Lot's of posts on mufflers and I have had five or my 72. If you have SSi's I think the best all around single out muffler is the dansk sport. Not too loud, not too quiet and best of all, no drone.

I'm feeling a little sheepish now having posted this and coming to realize this is a question that seems to have been beat to death ;) I guess I'm new to all of this. Still, I really appreciate everyone's comments (and patience with me)!

So now I'm real curious to know if the Dansk in your link, the one specified for a 70's era car, will fit on my 85 because it has headers... It's tempting.

Just got back from a drive through town and yep...it's LOUD. I will do SOMETHING about it. (also just bought a grinder so I can dismantle the original system to make it easier to either store, or re-install!)

You need the '74 Dansk. It will bolt up to your exhaust and the muffler tip will be correct for your bodywork.

VFR750 04-23-2011 08:40 AM

Or find a used 1974 oem muffler like i did. It is probably louder than new due to it being 36 years old. ;)

Absolutely.....if your headers terminate exactly where the HE's would have.

No. The OEM HE's are a "1-out." No worries though... Take to a muffler shop, and they will fabricate the two pipes from header collector to the actual muffler.

+1 , I hope? Too funny, as I just purchased the above mentioned muffler from our host last week... I have headers, and currently a 2 in- 2 out Flowmaster. Certainly not the loudest car on the track, and very sweet sounds made at redline! However, a tad bit too noisy for driving around town. This has really made me too paranoid to drive the car on the street, except driving back and forth to the track, and to local car shows. The Flowmaster has made definite improvements in performance on the track. I just purchased the Dansk Sport Muffler for street, and new straight pipes for the track, and will now make the swap at the track. I hope to install the new muffler in the next 2 weeks. When I do, I will post a sound clip of all 3 exhaust configurations.

Actually I have headers, not the OEM HE's, so I should be OK, yes??

Yes.

The most important fact for the muffler is that it be "2 in." Any muffler shop will custom fit a pipe from flange to flange. Just make sure they make a bung hole on the driver's side for the o2 sensor. They will charge from $50-$100 to do this.

WIL84911 04-25-2011 09:33 AM

Yes M&K 2/1 is expensive but I think it's your best option. Minimal drone (I can drive this car all day) & sounds like a Porsche. Why don't you sell your current muffler to lower your cost?

markmalin 04-30-2011 12:59 AM

Here's an update....

So I got the Dansk from FedEx yesterday, removed the M&K and was all set, but it's not fitting. The input flanges line up great, but I find 3 issues :(

- my headers are such that there are these extension pieces (pipes) that run between the output of the header and the input of the muffler. In order to make the Dansk fit in place, these would have to be extended :( They're about 1-2" too short! If the Dansk is propped up so it's touching the bracket the straps go on, there's about 1" gap to those intermediate pipes.
- the straps are too short to wrap around the Dansk
- even if I could extend the pipes from the headers...(lets see if I can discribe this)...I think the shape of the Dansk is such that it won't properly fit on the bracket that the straps attach to. There's a cover plate on the bottom of the car that covers where the belts are (bottom of the engine at the back). This guy sticks out too far. If I set the muffler so it's hitting that, there's space between the strap bracket and the muffler.

Anyhow, it was pretty discouraging. I'm not sure what to do - if I get longer pieces out of the headers, I'd still have issues with the straps (would need bigger ones?) and fitment to that bracket the straps mount to. So I may call Pelican on Monday and see if they would take it back. My options are an M&K 2-in 1 out or going back to stock.

On the up side, dang it's easy to get at all this stuff under the car!

Mark.

Mark-
Can you post some pics? Of the headers, muffler, etc. You may need the muffler backet off of a 74-83 to make everything bolt up.

markmalin 04-30-2011 11:58 AM

Here are some pictures. I put the H&K back on the headers, but this gives an idea of the current system, the headers and those pipes that go between the headers and the muffler. I also have pic's of the bracket. So, if there's a different bracket for a 74 era car, that would do part of the job - Are there longer straps, too? The problem is, it's like I'd need the 2 pipes that go from the header to the muffler about 1 or 2" longer I think... (see pictures a couple posts below...)

markmalin 04-30-2011 12:00 PM

Here's the bracket for the straps.

So if I set the Danks in place and try to set the "lip" on the Dansk to fit into that little notch in the strap bracket, that cover on the body of the car that covers the belts underneath bulges out and hits the Dansk muffler and you can't seat that welded lip into the little notches. Also, the straps are about 2" too short.

(NOTE: these pictures are of the existing M&K muffler, not the Dansk muffler that I'm trying to install....)

So here's where it seems like this would need to be longer to mate with the Dansk and move the muffler far enough toward to back to clear that bulge behind the strap bracket.

PatrickB 04-30-2011 08:10 PM

Extremely simple solution. Take it to a muffler shop. For $50, they will extend the pipes or flanges, and probably even custom weld a mount to the muffler that may allow you to avoid the straps altogether. I have to chuckle at this, as many people would rather pay $1000 for an after market muffler that supposedly is a bolt on... Half the time, they never bolt up without modification anyway. often, you can purchase an aftermarket generic muffler from Magnaflo, Flowmaster, or Dynomax for less than $150, then pay $100 to a muffler shop to make the custom fit...

Can someone let me know if the Dansk 10-1010-164-M350 will fit easy enough with SSIs on my 80 SC?
