What are my options for dual inlet single out muffler?

Hi,

My 85 Carrera has headers and an M&K dual inlet dual outlet GT style muffler. I need to quiet it down, or primarily get rid of the drone at 2k RPMs. Before putting the entire stock exhaust system back on, I'm just curious - if I went with a dual inlet SINGLE outlet muffler bolted to the headers, what are my options? Right now I see M&K has a 2-in 1-out for $725. Are there other brands available for maybe not so much money? Would appreciate anyone's input on options.

One other thing - I've read a few things about backdating the exhaust, and I see these "1974" dual inlet single outlet mufflers on our host's website. Would this work with my headers? Seems like maybe the oulet is on the other side(?).

Thanks guys. Hope that's not too many questions for one post ;)

With Respect,
Mark.

Most people with a dual in / dual out that look this route just plug one of the outlets. Ben has one for his mufflers. You can then open it up for track days.

My '80 SC has B&B SS headers and a 2 in 1 out Bursch muffler. The outlet is on the drivers side. This is the "backdated" set-up and it is not quiet but it has a very plesant snarling cackle. The good news is the Bursch is fairly inexpensive.

I agree with Quicksilver, I would contact Ben and just get a plug for one of the outlets and keep the M&K.

Hey thanks, I have read about that. I should have clarified, my car has the GT style center outlets and I'd like to change it over to a stock looking single left out. That was my bad. :o

It might be worth plugging one just to see how much quieter it is, though. I guess that would answer my question as to whether a single out will quiet it down any, or stop the drone.

Mark.

Do you get a loud drone at 2k RPM's? Maybe I'm just getting old, but it's so loud that it's kind of driving me nuts. ;) Don't get me wrong, it sounds amazingly cool! It's just hard to take for a long time.

Hmmm . . .not that I have noticed. Highway speed is in the 3-3500 RPM range and I don't have any drone. However, I have owned the car for 16 years and it had this exhaust set-up when I bought it so I really have nothing to compare it to.

I guess the best way to describe what I'm noticing is, at 3000-3500 highway RPM's it's a pleasent sound. At idle it's pretty loud, sharly and crackly. But at 2000 (like driving through town at lower RPM's) there's a pretty strong (loud) droning resonance throughout the cabin. Sounds like maybe you're not getting that.

Monty have a long history and good reputation.

I have a Dansk with SSI's. Great sound and no drone. Ben makes some nice stuff as well, but no personal experience.

Difference may be caused by 3.0 v. 3.2

Do some research. Dual outlet mufflers are known to "drone" at highway speeds. Displacement is not reported as a factor.

Switch to a factory-style Dansk muffler. If new is more than you want to spend, keep an eye on the classifieds and ebay.

Ben makes a great two-in, one-out muffler. Quiet is a matter of opinion, but I tried a B&B two/two, a dansk two/two, and ben's original B&B compatible two/two. Couldn't find a two-out that didn't drone. I'm on my second M&K (they've been getting progressively quieter as he refines them, and I'm getting progressively older, so I upgraded) and I think it's great. Might end up trading it for a newer model as it's still a wee bit loud, but it does sound beautiful, and has no drone. Also incredibly well made and supported.

Yep - been there - done that - got the t-shirt. Go to a single out - you'll be happy you did. Sell yours on pelican parts classifieds - or see if Ben will take a trade...

So it made a significant difference in sound level, then?

JeremyD 04-22-2011 10:22 AM

Quiet is relative. Me personally - I want my Porsche to sound like a sports car.

I think the stock 3.2 sounds like poop. Or doesn't sound (it's too quiet)

But on the other end of the spectrum - you have open pipes.

In between are many variations - and costs

The MK is a nice compromise of performance, sound and value. I prefer the one out as I have always had trouble tolerating the drone of the two outs.

Probably the Dansk dual out had the least amount of drone - but could never get the muffler tips to sit level.

Then the MK dual out (I had one of the early GT center outs) that was not bad - but as you note - a warble/drone around 21-2300 rpms

the worst was probably my magnaflow with dual outs on B & B mufflers - made good power - but wow - and a drone from 2500-2900 rpms. (I knew it was loud when my 10 year old son was complaining how loud it was)
YouTube - 3.4 Dyno

Probably my two favorites
are the 993 version (single out) MK Gen I

and my current two in one out $25 bursch that's on my 2.7 now...

I love my Monty that I bought about two years ago.

It cost under US$700 back then. If the A$ price hasn't changed, it will be over US$1,100 today. At that price I would definitely go with the M&K.

If it was my car.....

Not sure what your budget is, but for me, the best sounding (not too loud or soft) single outlet exhaust is the following.

Find yourself a Dansk single outlet twin inlet sport exhaust.
They really sound great.
Factory, but with a bit of a deeper tone.
The host site here sells one for $480.
Used ones come up rarely on eBay.

Personally I think you'll be disappointed with the sound (and performance) of a capped off twin outlet M&K unit.
But it might be worth a try.
The single M&K's still quite loud as well.
Monty's are great, but even the single outlets are quite loud (had one on my 75 US Carrera for awhile, then ditched it....drove me crazy).

I search for a more noisy muffler than my Dansk 2/2 out brand new.

If you want , we can do an exchange.
