Rear Main Oil Seal Installation

Used old seal to press new seal in but questioning how far new seal should seat, it looks like I've pressed it in approx. 1/16th further than old seal. Is there a spec for seal depth?
Thanks.

flush, but 1/16 all around won't hurt anything.

Time to revive this old thread.

Mine is in recessed as well, but close to 3mm (just under 1/8 of an inch.) I attempted to install it slightly recessed to hit some new ground with the lip on the crank. Now I am worried I may have pushed it too far? I used the fancy 234 tool which lets you push it farther than your rubber mallet and a piece of wood would ever ...

Rear Main Seal Install with P234 tool - highly recommended

Check the pic below and please comment. This is on my 993, btw. No problem getting another one at $20 if you think it is getting hairy. Unfortunately I did not check how far the wear mark was from the back edge of the "journal". It is easier to change now than later ...

Thanks,

George

For some reason I thought these were to be installed slightly "proud" and I think I have a leak. Maybe install a new one recessed?

Bump - need to send back my fancy tool that I rented - can some of the experts chime in again and let me know if I am okay? Otherwise I'll keep the tool longer and install another seal! Thanks!

George

Ah perfect that is how mine looked when I installed mine but I wasn't entirely sure since I hadn't seen one before. Your picture soothed my mind.
