Post INSTALLING FENDER FLARES

i have a 76 targa. i want to install fender flares. i don't want big ol turbo flares. i want short, about the 9in. variety.i want them because they look great, not necessarily for wider tires.my question is do i also need a different bumper and rockers? what else do i need? what is the procedure for installing. i have mig welder, but have heard of fiberglass. i also would prefer not to cut vehicle.what to do?

You've got to cut. Steel flares, butt-welded and finished with lead, are the best way to go. You can add SC or Carrera flares (they're the same), and you only need to add them to the rear.

Welded and filled USED to be the way to go. All the high line shops are now using a new material by 3M that bonds, or "adheres" the flairs on. Much quicker, easier, cheaper AND stronger than a weld--so they say--. I have had both done to several cars of mine. The fenders on my car now have been on for over 2 years now, with several track days or twisting bodies etc, no problem whatsoever. You can grab the fenders at the lip and pull up as hard as you can and they dont move, or distort.

I would like to see pictures of that. I still have two steel flares that will get welded on someday, or glued with a 3M product. I couldn't find anyone local that would do it or that I trusted to do it. I plan on keeping the car for awhile so it didn't bother me, I'll get it done next year when I'm back home. Plus by then I'll probably have little boo-boos all over the car and it will neeed a fresh coat of paint anyways. I guess that's why people refer to a Porsche with the word evolution all the time......I'm sure mine will evolve into a huge money pit bigger than boat expenses before I'm satisfied. Sure is fun though!!!!

the bonding product that i have seen is DURAMIX. lots of body shops using it now says the auto body supply store. they recommend 4125 universal adhesive. it's made to bond fiberglass to metal. sounds lots easier to me. what's available in fiberglass flares? what other body parts do i need? www.duramix.com

What if you just sold the 76 and bought a 78 SC?
