Rebuilt Alternator in Boston area.

Hello

I'm looking around for a rebuilt alternator for my car ....got a quote from local Porsche shop: $270 for factory rebuilt with 1 yr warranty...(when I exchange old one)

here's the description:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60467

I'm in the Boston area so I would like to find a place nearby and not have to ship alternators cross country in case of a problem.
Anyone recommend such a place? I called the dealership and a few auto parts stores but nothing.

Thanks.

"Beware the bearers of FALSE gifts & their BROKEN PROMISES. Much PAIN but still time. (Damaged Word). There is GOOD out there. We OPpose DECEPTION. Conduit CLOSING (BELL SOUND)”

The damaged word would appear to be intended as “BELIEVE”.

Give this place a call and see what they can do for you about rebuilding yours. I looked them up on the internet so I don't know much about them. Talk to them about the rebuild and see what they have to offer.

thanks Steve,

I also found about 5-10 such places but I was wondering whether anyone here has had
luck with any of them they can recommend.

anybody?

is $270 too much for a factory rebuilt alternator? Should I keep looking for a better price? Thanks.

I had very good luck just taking my alternator (87 carrera) to an alternator specialist. He actually works mostly on marine engines, but he pulled out his trusty catalogue and found he had all the parts to completely rebuild mine. Total cost, including powdercoating the fan was $40. You may want to give this a shot before you fork over the dough.

Good luck,
Michael

I think that is too much.

Rebuilding alternators is not rocket science, and I'm sure there are a lot of competent rebuilding shops in your area. You should be able to have it rebuilt, cleaned up, etc. so that it comes back looking and working like new for less than $100.

Try calling some of your local Porsche repair shops and see if they will give you a recommendation (they might not, because they would rather take it to the rebuilder themselves, have it done for $60, but charge you $250!).

If you can't get a recommendation, I'd just go with the Yellow Pages, and with an alternator repair shop that has been around for a while.

I have used Allston shop for Harley electric rebuilds in past . You will save a bundle. It's just wires, bearings, and brushes. They did good work . Ask them where the bearing company is on Western Ave. It's one street over. You can save a fortune on most bearings. It's where all the shops buy theirs.

I'm a little far south from you, but I had mine done at a local shop here in Baton Rouge last year for $50. Looked brand new, 1 year warranty and no problems since.
