Question for '88-89 owners
Regarding factory Porsche alarms?? Are they standard or optional? (Or dealer add on?) There is an option code for them, 533 (I think). I am asking because I have the decals on my "vent" windows, but the COA does not show the system. (I know about the accuracy of the COA.) I had an old Clifford sysem removed, but there is still a siren/horn in my engine compartment. It's on the left side of the car on the rear bulkhead; is it Porsche or Clifford?

Do you have an additional key slot on your drivers door? Not the handle but when you open the door?

Never had an 88 but the 89s you can tell by the light in the door lock button, when you lock the door it flashes, the alarm system was standard on the 89s. Only the 89s had that flashing light in the lock.

I concur here with BeyGon--if it is factory you will have a blinking led light in the top of your door lock button. However it will only blink when armed (pushed down) and if your system has been disabled or is in some other way broken you may only see a faint red tint through an opaque plastic on the top of the button. Again this is '89 MY

My 89 3.2 has the factory alarm, horn honks if you happen to set it off. Turns on by locking the driver door with a key. You then have to use the key to turn it off by unlocking it. If you happen to not shut the driver door fully and move the door, the alarm goes off. Honestly I cannot remember how to turn it off but I think I had to insert the key into the door and turn it to the right. The first time I set it off, I had to remove the battery cable to shut it up. No Alarm
I have an '89 and it does not have an alarm so it looks like it was an option.

@Steve: I had the same thing happen to me when it went off for the first time, I had no idea how to turn it off....had to disconnect the battery. I don't like to have to read manuals for software or cars.

All I had to do was put the key back in the door and turn it to shut the alarm off. I haven't ever seen an 89 without the alarm system but then I sure haven't seen them all.

I/we know that now... but when it is blaring I didn't think of that at the time. Another reason to get an 89, has the neat alarm sys.

Factory alarm
Speaking of the factory alarm system. How does one go about getting a copy of the alarm key. I got one from the PO when I bought the car and it works fine but I would like to get a copy just in case I lose or break this one. The alarm works fine but you really have to be easy opening the door if you don't want it to go off before you use the key to turn it off. Where can you get a blank?

I love these option sheets on stickers from other dealers, never understood how tires would be an option.
Will they deliver a car without tires from the dealer? I can understand if it was a care care order but for street car? In anycase, my 85 has factory alarm. try not to use it unless I am in the ghetto. I found the DME relay doesn't like it being tickled by it.

After posting the question, I found some literature that lists the alarm as stock on the '89 model. I know that it works with the key on '89s, and I "think" it works with a separate key (and is optional?) on other years and models.
I finally got up nerve to test it, and it uses the horn to annoy people, so the noisemaker in the eng. compartment is probably Clifford. Does anyone know what the "security chip" in the '89 keys does? Thanks all,

Owners Manual Review
I just checked my '89 owners manual. Under Anti-theft Alarm it says "The lock for the alarm is integrated in the door lock. The alarm system is primed when one of the doors is locked with the key. Light-emitting diodes in the locking knobs flash to indicate that the alarms primed."
I checked and I guess I really do have a factor alarm. You learn something everyday..... it never went off so I never realize I had one.

Don't open your trunk with the doors locked unless you like waking the neighborhood with continuous car honks (ask me how i know)

Luckily, the "additional" key was done away with for the '89. It simply engages or disengages when you lock or unlock the door. Works like a charm on my '89. I'll have to check my sticker to see if it is shown as an add-on. My guess is that you won't find an'89 without an alarm system..never seen an '89 that didn't have a Porsche alarm decal on the rear side windows. In fact, I replaced those stickers with new ones! Although I can't remember exactly (but could test it easily), I think I was working on my car one weekend,....finished up,..closed and locked the door...walked around front and noticed I had not closed the bonnet all of the way,..so I shut it,..then the alarm went off....
It's worked flawlessly..like big911fan has mentioned: you don't even know it's there!!!!! Doyle
