Hello and Help!
Hi, I'm a long time fan and a newbie 911 owner. I bought my 83 911SC on Monday!! I love this car!! I have a question I was hoping someone could answer. What does the "stock" factory steering wheel for this car look like? The car came with a Momo but I want to get the original. Is it a 3 spoke or a 4 spoke? My data is conflicting. Thanks in advance!!

Congrats !!! Outstanding selection..the SC is. The original wheel is three spoke. I'm sure someone here could post a picture. If your not overly wrapped up in originality a nice 930S wheel is a great addition. Although only if you have no better place to drop $350.

Thanks! I did a lot of research before I bought it and I must say I'm very happy. My goal is to "restore" it to stock. So I guess you could say I'm a purist. Overall the car is in excellent condition inside and out. The car did come however with a Carrera rear deck lid with a Turbo tail! It even says "Carrera" on the back. I will be removing that as well. The reason I'm confused by the 3-4 spoke issue is that my 83 manual shows the car with both!! Some one else with an 83 told me he had 4 spoke????

With many years of 911's to choose from, you picked the best. Clever you! Be sure to proclaim your allegiance to the SC heritage by joining the SCWDP. We're taking over the World don'cha know? Oh yes, the steering wheel..... I can't find any info on 4-spoke wheels, only the 3-spoke variety. You may find one at a swapmeet. My own SC is proud to have a 930S wheel installed. The stock wheel (which was in excellent condition) is safely stored away for the next (lucky) owner. |

I have a stock 3-spoke wheel if you are interested...
Its from my 83 911SC. I put a 930 S wheel in. The old wheel is in good shape. Let me know if you need the wheel.

Wow thanks for the quick response guys. Now I just have to find a stock oem 3 spoke wheel. Here in San Diego there are several sources so that shouldn't be too tough. Who knows maybe someone will want to trade for the Momo? Anyhow, glad to finally be a 911SC owner and looking forward to many years of "Porsche projects and fun!!"

Personally, I detest all of the factory steering wheels at least up to the late (993/Boxster/996) airbag 3-spokes, which you can't really change economically anyway, at least without losing the airbag.
A nice Momo or 930S wheel is a plus rather than a minus in my book. |

I have to agree that the 3-spoke was never my favorite: I have a Momo and it fits the look perfectly.
But enuf about me: did you say if you had a coupe or cab or targa? The SC is a sweet car and I fell into one by accident...lucky me! Do note how the trans is shifting, the car running, etc. and be sure to baseline the cars fluids and filters, getting a valve job and CO2 check as soon as you can if you have no records of this sort of service being done recently. Do this prior to trying to troubleshoot any nits as you can cancel out the variables by setting the car as right as you can. You can do so much of the work on these cars yourselves. I remember transitioning from an MGB and a TR6 over to the Mercedes and thinking, wow! how well build. Then I got my hands on this car and I must say the design and execution is amazing. Enjoy! The book referenced above is useful. I have a new copy here at home that I can sell you if you would like it (I have two copies: I'd sell you my new copy). Now you aren't revealing the SC model you have. Fear not the Targa; though ridiculed it remains the most versatile and heart-stopping, especially when $2K worth of top comes flying off! John |

Congratulations. Some folks say that the '73 RSR or the 959 or 917 are the finest Porsches ever made, but that's because they are not familiar with the '83 SC. They came with 3-spoke wheels. Mine is an unmolested car in excellent shape, and I have been staying pretty faithful to stock configurations but that period is closing. She's now starting down the road of becoming the perfect car for me. The engine is getting a little more power, and the car is losing a little weight. Suspension improvements are in her future. This could happen to you, as well.

Welcome to the club. I am in SD as well and will be more than happy to share my limited knowledge of who to take it to and where to find used parts. My last p-car was an 83sc as well. Currently in an 85 Carerra.
Before you spend the $$ on getting a stock wheel, check out the 930 wheel at AJ USA (on Mira Mesa blvd). They have one on the board and will let you take it out to your car to see how it would look. I was hesitant to take out my worn 4 spoke, but decided to take the plunge and it is amazing what a difference it makes. They sell the whole kit (with Porsche logo on the horn) and actually give a sheet of directions that appears to be written by someone with a firm grasp of the English language. So installation was a breeze. Bottom line: Looks good, feels good. Keep checking back with this BBS--much knowledge can be found, most parts from Pelican are here. And that crazy SCWDP group will try to lure into their web. |
