Can someone post a picture of your speedometer?

Hi,

I'm in the process of reassembling my speedo after replacing the bad ODO gear. I want to align the needle as close as possible to where it was, but I failed to take a close-up picture of the face before dismantling it. Can someone please snap a nice closeup (straight on) of your 85'ish Carrera speedo? Mine is the 160 MPH version.

Thanks guys!!
Mark.

Mark, I recently changed my ODO gear also and faced the same problem. I put the needle at the "O' tick and put the lense/bezel back on but didn't crimp it back down. I re-installed the unit and took my GPS to check accuracy. Mine was high by about 3 miles at 70mph. I simply pulled the face off and twisted the needle down a little to make it correct. You probably could skip the lense install till you verify the accuracy.

Mark,
Here is where mine is now. It used to read about 65 at 60 true, and when at rest, it settled right on the first mark.
Now it reads 59ish at 60 real MPH, 29ish at real 30. Good enough.

Thanks guys! This is a big help. I suppose I should check it with my GPS but I'm too excited to get it all back together and try the odometer But the pictures help(!) and maybe I should verify it.

Again, thanks!!
Mark.

Yes, good idea to verify it by just snugging the speedo into place so it won't fall out, before tightening up the bezel, and making a test run. The two I've fixed both are now set at the same spot, BTW. YMMV, but I'd bet you'll be very close as such if you also were reading 5 high; seems many cars do!

I decided to go ahead and take the car out with my GPS and verify the speedo needle. I figure I've got it all apart anyhow. This worked out brilliantly It's dead on now!

For the record, here's what I did. I wound up just taking some test leads and hooking up the speedo pod and setting it on the dash. I didn't have my GPS, but I found this awesome app for my iPhone. It's called "SpeedBox". It's a great little analog speedometer application that's really accurate. Anyhow, I mounted the iPhone in it's holder next to the speedometer sitting on the dash and it worked out splendidly

Thanks for the help, guys!

Mark.

Interesting...

Mine sits at the bottom of the first hash mark.

Seeing this thread made me wonder if I had it in the wrong spot. I had my speedo redone by Hollywood Speedo. So I did a search of speedo photos from other 83 SC's and they are all in the exact same spot as mine.

Why do you think you have to start from a lower point? Do you have non stock tire sizes?

Nope. Stock tires. A lot of 911 speedos are "optimistic", in that a reading of 110 might only be 100-105, just as an example.
Mine always covered a mile in one minute while reading 65 MPH, until I replaced it (the needle) lower down. Now it covers a mile a minute at 59 MPH (well, just under 60...). Edit: '86 Carrera, but the same speedo....

I compared mine to GPS once and it was pretty close. The speedo is kind of small, so there is much space between the 10 mph marks. So it's all a estimate anyway.

My old BMW's were all roughly 5 MPH "optimistic". I once heard there was some sort of law suit back in the 80's which caused the German companies to do this. Could be urban legand, though. But in any case, all 80's BMW's read ~5 mph high. My Carrera was reading about 4 high. I adjusted it down just a tad. Now it is bang on!!

Hey Matt - what wheel is that? Is that a Monte Carlo?? I'm looking to change my Prototipo for either a Monte Carlo or a Tuner. Just curious

Yes. It's the Monte' Carlo. I think it's the 350mm dia. They make two sizes. It's the smaller of the two. I just cant' remember and am too lazy to look it up.

I'm getting the impression the "right" place to put it is on the first tick mark when it's off, but if you do that it runs about 5 mph high. So mine's below that and reads bang on (if not maybe 1 mph slow...which is kind of bugging me because I really need to watch it now

Yep, I had to watch it for awhile, too; used to it now, though. It's still a "citation free" red car......
