Clutch Smell
Hey all -
84 911 Targa. Had my transmission rebuilt last year and replaced the clutch (myself.) The car is shifting GREAT now. They only issue is an "asparagus" smell when I start up FAST in 1st gear. Have probably driver 750 miles on the new setup. A friend also had the same problem under normal acceleration when he was trying out my car recently - but I think that was related to him learning where the clutch engages. Should I be concerned? Could this simply be a new clutch breaking in OR could it be a required clutch cable adjustment? NOTE: I also replaced the Alternator Belt recently - had the problem BEFORE and AFTER the replacement and the belt seems to be the right "tightness." Have heard that a slipping Alternator Belt can cause a similar smell. I don't think that is my problem (but am open to input....) Thanks - jcsjcs

you should not smell the asparagus unless you slip the clutch. i would check the adjustments below,
where does the clutch engage on the pedal?

I followed 101 Projects for the clutch adjustment and I believe it helped.
The gap at the positioning lever was 1.2 mm without the clutch cable. It was NOT 1.0 mm when I put on the clutch cable. After some messing around I was able to get it to 1.0 mm. I am guessing that this puts necessary pressure on the clutch mechanism to show that it is "ready to go." I also could not get the 25 mm gap change in the cable worked out because I don't have a rubber stop behind my clutch pedal! $2.25 and I will get one... does someone have a picture of how this is setup?
