There's little doubt the look is very important and even less doubt that opinions will vary, but I'd just like to add that what hasn't been mentioned is that the various options in rim width will prompt just as many options in tire sizes, all of which WILL alter the balance of handling, traction, ride, and steering feedback (the last being very important to me). If this is something you care about you may want to take it into consideration along with the look. It has been pretty much a no-brainer for many years that wider, lower-profile tires were always better, always preferred simply because they "stick" better, but recently there has been a recognition that this has been at a cost (some would say slight) of ride, "feel", and steering feedback (not to mention more abrupt transitions at the limit). The differences may not be huge, but then again, if you're not going to track or autocross your car, and you value and enjoy less-than-perfect back roads, you might consider saving your money and keeping your ride the way it is.

Having said all that, my own ride is an SC lowered to European ride height with 7" & 8" 16's, and I find it a good compromise. But I do have 245X16X45 at the rear, and at my next tire change I'll be going back to 225X16X50 for the reasons above.

nice car mike!

Thanks everyone, I think I'm after a compromise. I'm not a big fan of deep dish and I really like the classic look but I want the rear guards filled out whilst all at relatively low stance. A suggestion was made to run 6" & 8" I think this makes really good sense for me, however would love to see some pics if anybody can help.

My preference is always, 9s fit the SC with 245 rubber, do it.. and how it holds the tail in line.

If you don't like the looks of deep lips, but want 8" in rear, you can use a Fuch 16x8 from a 944 Turbo. It's lip/dish is comparable to a 911 16x7 in appearance.
Not sure if the offset will allow you to accomplish the look and width that you are after, but it's a thought.
Generally, the 944 Turbo 16x8 Fuchs are desired by 911 owners, for use in the front, to allow mounting 225 tires in front, while using 16x9 with 245 tires in rear.

i actually found that when i went from 7 front and 9 rear, to 8 front and 9 rear (with a more aggressive offset), that whilst it looked just as good/better, it reaaally made it obviosu that i hadn't lowered the car yet..

AUS911SC3: Are there spacers already on the front? I just looked at my car again and it doesn't look the way you seem to describe. If your's are hangin' out too far, I wouldn't even like the look either.
I took some pix, and will post them later. My tires/wheels are still within the flares of the fenders, car is fairly low, with no issues; 911 offset 7s and 8s........with stock 205/55 and 225/50 x 16. They have a pretty wide tread pattern, too, and actually measure wider than a LOT of 205/225s out there. Lots of rubber on the pavement for their size.

Here are those photos of 7s and 8s, 16 inch, etc.... I especially like the protection (little "lip" there) offered by these tires where the tire meets the rim, so as to prevent curb rash, though I have yet to rub up against one. :) With that added width, they actually measure closer to 215/235.....

This thread is helpful to me as I'm sorting out how to treat the wheels on a 1989 Carrera 3.2. I've had the car fixed after being hit broadside by a red-light runner (boo!) and will have the wheels freshened also. Some of you may have seen a similar query I made recently within a thread about chrome vs. polished Fuchs, and I've appreciated all the inputs and info there.

I think I've decided to use the existing/stock wheels which I believe are 6s and 8s. I'm not a competitive driver, just enjoy the car around town and sometimes on the mountain roads here in SoCal. But, along the way, I've been trying to learn what is the most desirable wheel size combo for this car, and why?

What I think I've learned so far is that larger wheels are more typically chosen for the aesthetic value - filling out the wheel wells with a more macho look - than for street performance characteristics (understand that track use has different priorities). I guess I'm just asking one more time, before I send the stock wheels out for refinishing, am I missing anything about street performance that might sway me towards changing the wheels to larger ones, as I'm going to refinish a whole set now anyway?

Thanks

Shannon

Forgive my ignorance, but I see no one mentioning anything about having 6's in the front, and 9's in the rear - cannot be by coincidence that no's tried it (as opposed to it not being able to br deone)? It would seem that the 6's would still have the "right" look to those who aren't keen on the 7's but want the wide rubber in the back. Is this even possible and/or anyone tried it with their ride?

I checked it out.

With 951 8x16 you need spacers (10 - 15 mm), otherwise look is sad.
951 8x16 at front gives a poor handling.

For the SC, I would always take the genuine 7+8 x 15. Look and handling just perfect.

who can help me with the max wheel width for a 69 912 body, RS flairs, SC suspension? Hearing 7's and 8's not 8's and 9's, which I would prefer
