Axle shaft question regarding 108mm vs 100mm CVs

Can anyone tell me if the bare axle shafts from early and late carreras (108mm vs 100mm CV joints) are the same size? In other words, can I replace my worn out 100mm CVs with 108mm CVs? (Of course i would be replacing the transmission axle flanges and stub axles also)
