Errrrrr.

my 84 carrera has a severe oil leak at the junction of the driver's side cam tower oil line and the line that branches off from that line that goes down to the hydraulic chain tensioner.

the PET states the cam tower oil line part number is 930 107 347 03 while the other part number is 930 107 347 02. this noted on section 104 of the PET, entitled "engine lubrication".

the -02 part is available via our host, but the -03 has been superseded by porsche and is thus NLA. what pelican has is 930 107 347 10, which calls for using 930 107 347 09.

the following will hopefully make things clear:

old p/n new p/n nomenclature
930 107 347 03 930 107 347 10 cam tower oil line
930 107 347 02 930 107 347 09 hydraulic tensioner oil line

the -10 part is different than its predecessor (duh), but what is different is that the junction between the two lines has been moved inboard roughly 1.5 inches.

this means that there is no way the -02 line is going to fit. the -02 line curves away from the engine center line around a projection of the cam chain box cover and then runs up above the engine to interface with its companion fitting on the -03 cam tower line.

the problem is that when i look at the picture of the -09 line, i can't visualize how it is going to bolt up to its -10 companion.

well, no sweat i thought. i just pop over to my friendly local porsche dealer and ask them. so i did. i was amazed to find out they don't have any better idea than i do. the parts guy was gone for like 10 minutes and came back out with the pages from the PET printed out, pointed at the diagram, and said "i think you need these".

what about brackets i asked. and what about this? and that? the parts guy didn't know. the PET is all the documentation he had access to and he had no experience with an 84 carrera.

to make matters even more interesting, the oil line he wanted to sell me was priced at a cool $65 PLUS $20 for shipping which would get it in denver on tuesday. wherein i would have to go pick it up.

pelican charges $20 for the same part.

does anybody have any knowledge of what additional parts i need? i have a shiny new -10 part, and i'd love to be able to bolt something else to it.

the weather here is gorgeous, and my car doesn't run

I was just there last week. The new parts are shiny silver instead of annodized. I installed a new cam line hose are rebent the drop line to match the tap location of the all steel tube. The fact is the location is less than half inch from the old connection and if you keep everything loose until all connections are made the rebend will suffice. the support of the oil tube is still usable.

Take a look at this thread - I found when I researched for my replacement.
Some bending may be needed, but the 930.107.347.09 might be closer to what you need.

on edit - Now I just saw your 09 reference - my bad.

Cam Tensioner oil line doesn't match Cam oil line

I had some fun with the lines on my 87.

look for a hose building shop

i had one burn up. took it to the local PECO and they remade it for $12

the -09 oil line came today, and so i went out to install it. i couldn't find the two copper gaskets for the banjo bolt that threads into the hydraulic chain tensioner, so i went down to my local porsche dealer looking for parts.

and they didn't have any. none. zip. zero. nada. but they would order them for me, and i could pay an outrageous sum for shipping and maybe get the parts in 3 or 4 business days. if that didn't work for me, i could wait for whenever it might be convenient for them to order parts from the warehouse that ships parts for older cars, and the parts would show up eventually. maybe. well, probably.

i will never visit that dealership again. in fact, i don't see any reason to go to any porsche dealer.

i called up eisenbud in denver, yes they had the parts i needed, and yes they would sell them to me. they had a really nice slate grey 356 C coupe they were working on. 356s don't do much for me, but that was a really pretty car.

i went home armed with parts, and promptly dropped one of my new washers (which i had spent 2.5 hours procuring) in down into the heat exchanger tube were it comes up through the engine tin. oh, snap!

well, i had planned to take the muffler off anyway. it's not necessary to do this to replace the oil line, but i needed to get the cat converted heat shield off. the heat shield was torn, twisted, covered with oil, and i was having a lot of trouble with the nut plate spinning and not releasing the bolts.

so i got to battle with rusted bolts for a couple of hours. didn't have to drill anything, so i counted my blessings.

i got the copper washer out of the heat exchanger, and the lines bolted right up. the grommet bolted right up into the the little bracket, and everything went together as nicely as one could hope.

as i was buttoning things up, i decided to see how tight the driver's side lower valve cover nuts were, as i was getting some seepage. all the nuts were very loose to my disgust, so i tightened them up. will i was doing the tightening, i reflected on the fact that the reason i was under the car finishing a two week maintenance cycle was because i decided to tighten up a nut hoping to stop seeping oil.

rear wheels on, off the jackstands, torque the lug nuts, and fire it up! no leaks, hurray. i took off on the test drive, and tooled around some. car ran fine, but i'm going to check if i'm getting full throttle.

but when i got home and parked in the garage, there was no smell of burning oil when i got out of the car. it's been quite some time since that was true. for now, my car leaks no oil.

today is a good day.

My dealership parts dept basically told me I'd be lucky if they have an oil filter on the shelf. Thus far, anything I have enquired about has been twice the price and 5 days away. At least with pelican its only 5 days away!
