What's this green light for?

I'm working on a wiring job and was wondering what the green indicator light in the bottom center is supposed to be for? I can't find it on the 911 wiring diagrams in the forum.

Should be a "park lamps" indicator. Comes on with the first notch in the headlamp switch.

I think that (at the bottom of speedo) is an indicator for when the fog's are on.
Would have to check for sure.
Hope the UPS girl leaves mine on the steps today from North Hollywood Speedometer having the odometer fixed.

Regards

OK, now I Have a question too... There is a vertical knob at the bottom of the gauge board situated between the speedo and teh tacho and above the wiper delay switch (it is visible in the above pic). I looked inside the dashboard, it is connected to a cable that has a hex-head at its end and in my case, is completely loose.

This is probably the panel dimming or something, but what is it supposed to be connected to? Currently its just a mechanical wire turning knob.

The fog lamp indicator is in the pull knob. It comes on when fogs are in the on position.

I think my green light comes on with my "city lights". I have ROW H4s.

Wow, thanks guys, this really helps! The light socket has 2 terminals, so I'll have to figure out what's what. Wiring/electrical is the very least of my rebuild skills!

I just got the speedo and clock back from North Hollywood and they did a fantastic job rehabing them. The speedo is a replacement for a badly rusted out one and it broke my speedo cable the first time I ran it. I also bought it for my 912 (the seller said it was from a 912) and I didn't notice it had a slightly different terminal configuration and a top speed of 150! Duh. I need to work on my attention to detail.

Anyway, we'll fix her up thanks to your input.

Another question, does the green light stay on if you pull the light switch all the way out for the headlights or should it go off?

Yep, you need to reinstall it into the back of your speedo and then you can reset the trip meter setting.

wwwcad,

I see a 1967-68 912 (or is it a ’67-68 911 normal).

From my original 1968 911 (normal) Owner’s Manual, it says: “Also located on the [speedometer] dial face is a control lamp indicating that the parking lights are on.”

Here is part of the diagram from :
http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_1965.jpg

This (red arrow) agrees with the wiring diagram in my ’68 Driver’s Manual.

Be careful to not confuse white/green with green/white in this diagram.

Best,
Grady

Thanks guys. The speedo was probably replaced by the PO, and has the front button for reset.
FYI - My park brake indicator was on the temp/press gauge.

The front button is different! Must be an upgrade or newer model.

It's a warning to let you know they are on - the parking lamps are used in Europe, in cities without headlights, back in the day. Some flavors of the Euro H4 headlamp had a small bulb at the bottom that was wired into the parking lamp circuit, and ROW cars had an extra wire pigtail for that.

I believe that cars so equipped also had their turn signals set up so that they stayed on (steady) when parked if the turn signal switch was set and the key off, again per european rules.

even the US SCs have the feature where the turn signals stay on steady with key off, it is to keep cars from running into you when parked. mercedes always have that too (using headlight switch positions instead of turn signal switch).

the extra little bulb in euro lights you are thinking of is the "city light." a couple of cities had the idea that you would use a low wattage light in the city instead of headlights. I think they gave up on that very quickly. parking lights are different; all cars have parking lights, even GM products.
